Choice Articles Connections Assignment 


Choice Articles:

Directions: ​You will choose ​two articles​ to read today. They can be about the same
topic, or different topics. For each article, complete each step of the assignment by
following directions listed and answering the questions.

Article 1

Step 1:​ Choose an article either from the folder about examples of systemic
discrimination, or find one of your own from a scholarly source and get it approved by
Mrs. Harper.

1. What is the title of the article you chose?


School dress codes face censure around the country for biased rules
2. Why did you select this article?
Because dress codes are something everyone in school is concerned about.
Step 2:​ Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.
Who? Mainly females and females of color.
What? Dress codes being enforced
When? 2016 to present time
Where? School campuses
Why? Because teachers and others believe it is their choice on what we wear
How? By enforcing a strict dress code

Summary: Students around the world are enforced to comply to their schools
strict dress codes. This makes mainly the girls feel oppressed because it usually
happens more than once. People protest and fight against such treatment
because they believe girls of today's society should be treated in such a manor.

Step 3​: Answer the following discussion questions in complete sentences ​using ACE​.

1. Who was being ​discriminated​ against? Why?


Females of color and female in general because their clothes are a “distraction to
boys.”
2. What ​injustices​ were present in the article you read?
 
Kids are taken out of class to change their clothes or to deal with discipline
actions against them.
3. How is this an example of ​oppression​?
This is oppression because students have this Injustice on a regular basis.
4. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in ​Night​?
Students are allowed to express what they wanted to wear. As in Night they were
discriminated because of their beliefs. Both were oppressed and treated unfairly.

Women's roles and rights during the 1800s.
2. Why did you select this article?
As a female I felt that I needed to read the article.
Step 2:​ Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.
Who? Women
What? Roles and rights
When? 1800 to present
Where? Society
Why? Because females were fed up being treated poorly
How? Word of mouth and rallies

Summary:
In the early 1800’s many women felt oppressed. Men were the workers and made all
the money. Men also took control over the women and their family. Women were fed up
(and still are)on how they were treated.

Not having equal treatment for both male and females.
2. Who was being ​discriminated​ against? Why?
Women because they were thought of as the lesser person.
 
3. How is this an example of ​oppression​?
This is an example of oppression because it have gone on for many years.
4. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in ​Night​? Women and men were being treated different during that time. During
Night the Jews were treated differently from the Germans.
