Directions: To answer these questions, review the Pre-Participation Screening and Wellness Questionnaires and
use MI through discussions with your client. Type thorough answers for each question. You MUST attach the Pre-
Participation Screening and Wellness Questionnaires to receive credit for this assignment.
A. List the reasons your client is in the SHU Personal Training Program. Based on your motivational
interviews, what are the underlying motivations for his/her participation in the program? (2 pts)
My client is in the SHU Personal Training Program to help her lose body weight, gain muscular
strength (specifically upper body), and lower her time in the mile by 1 minute. New exercises and new
challenges motivate my client to accomplish great things within the program.
B. What are your client’s intrinsic motivators (doing something for the reward inherit in the activity itself) for
exercise? How are you incorporating these into your client’s program? (2 pts)
My client’s intrinsic motivation for exercise comes from being challenged and being recognized. I
incorporate both of these things into my exercise program for my client by challenging her with new
exercises and heavier weights that she has never done before. I also challenge my client to continue
good habits and trying challenging workouts outside of our sessions. I show recognition to my client
when she does a new personal best on an exercise and when improvements are seen in any phase of our
program.
C. Using the table on page 69 of the Coaching Psychology Manual, state your client’s reasons to stay the same
and reasons to change his/her behaviors. Do not compute composite scores. (2 pts)
My client’s reasons to stay the same include focusing on chores at home, allows her to focus on the
classes she has to teach, allows her to spend more time with her family and her dog. Some reasons for
my client to change include to reach her goals of how she wants to see herself, lose the unwanted body
weight, increase her overall strength and improve her health and fitness levels.
D. Using the confidence ruler on page 70 of the Coaching Psychology Manual, provide your client’s
confidence number for a critical behavior he/she wants to change. Why did he/she not pick a lower
number? What would assist your client to get a higher number? (2 pts)
My client’s confidence number was a 7, I believe she chose this number because she is confident in her
ability to do what she needs to do in order to achieve her goals. She didn’t pick a lower number
because she is confident, she will change her behavior to better herself. I think just pushing her to be
the best version of herself and challenging her to keep up the good work and continue to get better
daily will help her get a higher number.
1. Based on the definition of “regular exercise” in the Exercise Questionnaire, do you agree that this was
the client’s stage of change at the beginning of the semester? If no, which stage do you think your
client is in? Explain (1 pt)
Yes, I agree that my client was at this stage of change in the beginning of the semester. I know how
much she does outside of our sessions, and I am very confident that she did even more on her own prior
to beginning this program.
2. Which stage of change do you think your client is in now? Explain. (1 pt)
I believe my client is still in the maintenance stage, she cannot go backwards as we started the program
around 5 weeks ago and have exercised 2 times a week every week since then. Thus, she is
maintaining the hard work she put in prior to the start of the program as well as the hard work she has
done during the first half of the program.
3. Briefly summarize what you found from the self-efficacy questions (number 6a-e). Does your client
have a high, moderate or low self-efficacy towards exercise? What can you do to help your client
improve/maintain his/her self-efficacy based on the answers to the questions? (2 pts)
Based on my clients answers it is known that she has a high self-efficacy towards exercise. I can try
and help my client maintain this level of self-efficacy by pushing her to exercise in these situations and
encouraging her that she can and will do great in all the exercises I challenge her with.
4. Briefly summarize what you found from reviewing the decisional balance data (number 7). (1 pt)
PROS = a, b, d, e, f, h, i, j, l, n
CONS = c, g, k, m, o, p
From reviewing my clients answers here I found that she thinks very positive about exercise and
accomplishing it daily. She thinks it will help her and benefit her in many aspects of life. From things
such as feeling better about herself to having more energy for her friends and family if she exercised
regularly. However, she also believes regular exercise would take time away from her friends and
family.
5. Choose another health/fitness related behavior that your client is working on that is not considered
regular aerobic exercise. State the behavior and determine the stage of change for this specific
behavior. Explain how you came to this conclusion. (2 pts)
Another fitness related behavior that my client is working on is taking the stairs everywhere throughout
campus. She was doing this prior to the start of the semester therefore I would say the state of change
for this behavior is maintenance. My client and I came to the conclusion that doing this will help her
accomplish some of her goals faster and just improve her health and fitness overall.
6. Answer the three questions in the box on page 41 in the Coaching Psychology Manual with regard to
this health/fitness related behavior. (2 pts)
We want to maintain this behavior because it will help speed up the process of achieving the goals we
set at the beginning of the semester, and it will also help improve the health and fitness of my client.
We shouldn’t try and change this behavior because it is beneficial to what we want to accomplish
through the program as well as to my client. It would take a level of laziness to change this behavior,
also a lack of motivation to accomplish the set goals.
7. Comment on your client’s self-efficacy with regard to this health/fitness related behavior. (1 pt)
My client has a very high self-efficacy about always taking the stairs around campus. This high self-
efficacy has been the case for this behavior by my client. She has been taking the stairs for long before
we started this semester just because she feels like its good for her and because she didn’t used to
exercise regularly.
8. List and describe which coaching skills for behavior change you will implement to help your client
with this behavior. (2 pts)
I will encourage my client to continue behaving in this way because it is beneficial to her and to our
exercise program. I will also challenge her to see how many flights or steps she can get daily.
