CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
Teamwork is a vital part of organizational life. Participating effectively in teams requires the ability to
use leadership skills appropriately. Areas covered include: group dynamics, leadership, decision making,
problem solving and conflict management.

During this course students will participate in structured activities and group discussions that will
provide them with an understanding of how groups develop and function effectively. Lectures, readings
and discussions will reinforce this understanding. Students will also have the opportunity to examine the
role of the individual within the group - both as a participant and as a leader

COURSE GOAL and LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course students will be able to:
 explain how groups develop and function effectively and relate this knowledge to work groups
 identify and use appropriate interventions to enhance group process
 discuss the pros and cons of different leadership styles and determine the appropriate
leadership style to use in a given situation
 identify and assess the impact of their own personality and leadership style on other group
members and on the group as a whole
 identify ways to motivate themselves and others
 solve problems, resolve conflicts and manage change as a group member
 demonstrate a working knowledge of group dynamics by analyzing a current group experience
and by assessing their role in that group

This is an experiential course. Analysis of group experiences is a significant part of the course, so a
minimum of 80% attendance is required.
REQUIRED REFERENCES: Readings will be assigned from texts on reserve in the CNC library.
Students wishing to purchase a group dynamics text will find either Working In Groups (Engleberg &
Wynn) or Joining Together, (Johnson & Johnson) to be valuable resources. Any edition will be useful, but
recent editions best reflect current research and themes. The Portrait of Personal Strengths will be used
in class. This is used in two of the prerequisite courses, so students should bring their copy from
MGT154 or LEAD101.
