Detailing Standard
SCOPE
The specification requirements and other design considerations summarized in this Part
apply in general to the design and fabrication of structural steel products. This
document describes the technical preferences and requirements commonly used in the
shop, for the cases were the shop drawings don’t specify any other procedure. This
document applies only to the steel products fabricated in Acero Estrella’s Shop.
The following specifications, codes and standards and are covered in this Manual:
2.1. Any steel structural element will be fabricated following the specifications of
the "AISC Manual of Steel Construction - LRFD (AISCM)".
2.2. For the packaging, loading & shipping, receiving, unloading, storage &
protection, erection of deck & job safety, deck damage & penetrations, and
placing concrete of the steel deck will be done following the specifications of the
"SDI MANUAL OF CONSTRUCTION WITH STEEL DECK".
2.3. For any structural joint using bolts, the “Specification for Structural Joints
Using ASTM A325 or A490 Bolts” shall be followed.
2.4. Any weld will be done following the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
as is required by the AWS D1.1 and approved by the engineer of record. The
welding symbols and the NDT symbols will be done according the AWS A2.4.
2.5. All the Joists will be fabricated and erected according with the specifications
of the "Steel Joist Institute" (SJI).
2.6. For the cleaning and painting process, the “SSPC Painting Manual” Vol. 1 &
Vol. 2 shall be followed.
2.7. OSHA Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry, 29 CFR
1926 Part, R Safety Standards for Steel Erection must be addressed in the design,
detailing, fabrication and erection of steel structures.
2.8. The design and Construction of any concrete element in the base of the
column, including the rods and reinforcing steel, will follow the ACI 318
specifications.
format by e-mail to warehouse and to the Project Planner. It will be sent in two
stages:
4.1.1. Shortly after the project has been ordered, the structural engineer must
review the material list according to availability. The structural engineer can
make changes to the list as long as the total weight of the project do not
exceed by more than 5%. Afterwards, the detailer will proceed to make the
material list and deliver it, which will also include a preliminary list of plates
according to his or her experience and counsel from the structural engineer.
4.1.2. After completion of the project’s 3D model, and after being reviewed and
approved by the structural engineer, the detailer will make a final ABOM with
precise steel sections and plates. The new or modified steel sections and plates
must be properly identified in this final ABOM.
4.2. Format’s general specifications
The ABOM will have three columns: quantity, units, and article description.
4.3. Standard Shapes (Columns, Beams, Braces, etc)
4.3.1. Article Description: Name of the section followed by the shape length and the
material specification. (PIEZA W8X31 X 30' ASTM A572 G50)
4.3.2. UNIT: Shape length, this length must be standard and available for purchase.
(i.e.: PIEZA 30')
4.3.3. Quantity: The product of this number and the shape length must be greater
than the total length needed for the Project. Example: 250’ / 30’ = 8.333 uds,
it must be specified 9 units.

belt lengths so that they can be processed.
If it is impossible to distribute the belts to standard separation, the
difference in the belt end separations, always less than or equal to the
specified gap
Unless otherwise noted, bolts will be ø⅜” A307-N-LSL. In lap splices

Tekla users should not elaborate a DBOM independently of the shop drawings since
these are included in the shop drawings. DBOM will be considered for erection,
cladding production and dispatch purposes.
The Packing List has five parts: the header, the form’s title, the project’s information
table, the main body, and the footer.
2.1. The header: it has brief information of the steel fabricator, along with its
approval by the company’s General Manager.
2.2. The form’s title: it shows the name of the form in use in Spanish and English
languages, with the capital letters DBOM: Detail Bill of Materials) and the
identification number for this form (F-6).
2.3. The project’s information table: provides the name of the Project that will be
fabricated, the project’s location, the customer’s name, project’s code, the type of
painting and cleaning method that will be applied to the structure. It also shows
the name of the detailer and the form’s elaboration date, along with the
fabricator’s logo.
2.4. The main body: is the main information in the packing list. It shows the
identification number for all steel pieces, the type of material, lengths (in meters),
measurement units (units or feet), weights (in pounds), areas (in square meters),
and others. In it, all the project’s elements are displayed with all their specific
information. Generally, the structural members on the list are classified in the
following:
a) General Specs.
b) Anchorage
c) Columns
d) Beams
e) Miscellaneous
f) Claddings: purling, metal roofing, metal decking, etc.
g) Bolting: for claddings and structure.

between them.
2.5. The footer: it shows all the departments related to the packing list:
Administration, Accounting, Quotation, Production, Shop and Quality Control.
2.6. Cladding Order Description
The Cladding Order consists on a list that shows all the cladding material for a
specific project. This digital format is shared between the Detailing Department,
Sales Department, and North West Industries (NWI). NWI is the cladding fabricator.

number, dispatch order number, order’s release date, customer’s delivery date,
NWI’s dispatch date, customer information (name, ID number, RNC, phone and
fax numbers), project’s code and project’s location.
2.6.2. Material description: this table shows all claddings fabricated by NWI (zinc,
aluzinc, standing seam, “teja real”, galvanized purling, flashings, galvanized
angles, translucent claddings y metal deck), specifying the quantity (in units),
lengths and dimensions (in meters, feet and inches), color and type of
cladding, and others.
3. TOLERANCES
The effects of mill, fabrication and erection tolerances require consideration in the
design and construction of structural steel buildings. However, the accumulation of
the mill tolerances and fabrication tolerances shall not cause the erection tolerances
to be exceeded, per Code of Standard Practice Section 7.12.
3.1. Mill Tolerances
Mill tolerances are those variations that could be present in the product as-
delivered from the rolling mill. These tolerances are given as follows:
4. WELDING
Two copies of welding details, apart from the project’s general shop drawings, will be
given to the shop. In minor projects, welding details will be included in the general set
of shop drawings.
Welding specifications for structural steel members are provided, with some exceptions,
by AWS D1.1. These exceptions are:
AISC Section J1.6 shall be used instead of AWSD1.1 section 5.17.
AISC Section J2.2 shall be used instead of AWSD1.1 section 2.4.1.1.
AISC table J2.5 shall be used instead of AWSD1.1 table 2.3.
AISC table A-K3.1 shall be used instead of AWSD1.1 section 2.27.1.
