Narrator: In 1519, a fellow named Ferdinand Magellan visited King Charles 5th of Spain
with his plans for exploration.
Magellan: So, your majesty, I’m thinking that the world isn’t flat as everyone else thinks, so
I’m planning on a trip to prove it! What do you think?
King Charles: Well, Ferdinand, if you think you can, why not!! (This will be amusing!!)
You have my blessing.
Magellan: Thanks ol’ boy, err your majesty! Wait and see, we’ll go down in history with this
one!!
Narrator: So Ferdinand Magellan sets sail on the 20th September, 1519. He takes five ships
and a crew of 270 with him, one of them being Juan Sebastian del Cano.
Del Cano: No, you get killed later on, so it’s up to me to complete the mission!
Magellan: Oh.
Narrator: The fleet sails across the Atlantic down the coast of South America, then through
a passage named the Strait of Magellan. (Magellan and Del Cano take turns with telescope)
Del Cano: Yeah, sounds appropriate!! (To audience:) He’s been whinging so much!!!
Magellan: I think it might be time to anchor here– (sings “I’ve just spent 6 months in a leaky
boat!”)
Narrator: After anchoring in Guam. The fleet set out again to cross the Pacific Ocean. They
arrived in the Philippines where Magellan got involved in a local war.
Del Cano: Ferdinand? Ferdinand? You ok? (shrugs shoulders) Oh well, guess it’s up to me
now!!
Narrator: Del Cano continues the journey which Magellan started. (continues with the boat
behind all the students, to arrive back at the beginning with the king.) He arrived in Spain in
1522. Del Cano then reported back to the king.
Del Cano: So you see, your majesty, we have sailed across the Atlantic, around the bottom of
South America, across the Pacific ocean, through the Philippines, across the Indian Ocean,
around the Cape of Good Hope, then back up the coast of Africa to Spain! We have thus
proven that the world is in fact round!!
King Charles: Who’d have thought that young lunatic would be right!!?
