CHAPTER I

The Problem and Its Setting

This chapter contains the statement of the problem, the


objectives, the hypothesis, the scope and limitations, and the
significance of the study.

Introduction

Hair loss or also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a

loss of hair from part of the head or body. typically the head is

involved. The severity of hair loss can vary from a small area to

the entire body. Thinning of hair is also known as telogen

effluvium and the cause of telogen effluvium is typically a

physically or psychologically stressful event. Telogen effluvium

is the term for hair loss that occurs temporarily as a result of

some trauma, stress, or shock to your body. Telogen hairs are one

type of hair, characterized by the end of the hair being shaped

like a bulb, and effluvium means to flow out.

When you're under stress, you may notice a lot of physical

symptoms — feeling anxious or exhausted, having trouble

concentrating, and even getting sick with a headache or upset

stomach. Stress can also be a cause of hair loss. When stress has

you “pulling out your hair,” as the expression goes, you could be

literally doing just that.

Some hair loss is normal, but telogen effluvium results in

excessive hair loss due to a disruption in the natural growth and


rest cycle of hair. Generally, between 80 and 90 percent of hair

follicles on the scalp are actively growing, with the other 10 to

20 percent in the resting phase. Many events can disrupt this

balance and result in temporary hair loss, typically seen as hair

that falls out in clumps when you brush, wash, or style your

locks. Approximately 3 percent of all pediatric doctor visits

made each year are connected to hair loss-related issues in

children, including thinning and bald spots. The causes can range

from things as simple as wearing hair in a ponytail too tightly

to fungal infections of the scalp to alopecia, which in some

cases can result in a total loss of all body hair.

Objective

The objective of this research is to prove that

Statement of the problem

Does Allium cepa <onion> extract have a significant effect on

improving hair growth.

Hypothesis
Null: there is no significant effect in using Allium cepa<onion>

extract as a hair grower.

Alternative: Null: there is a significant effect in using Allium

cepa<onion> extract as a hair grower.

Significance of the study

Individually or in combination, coconut oil, olive oil and white


onion extract are natural treatments to promote healthy hair.
Both fight dryness, with a coconut oil treatment being
particularly effective in preventing frizz. Research in a 2003
issue of the "Journal of Cosmetic Science," said coconut oil
penetrates deep into the hair shaft and, when used as a pre- and
postwash treatment, also protects hair from protein loss, which
can lead to hair damage. Adding olive oil to the coconut oil hair
treatment will moisturize your scalp and discourage flakes.

Olive oil is a complete powerhouse when it comes to hair care.


The beneficial oil can help your locks look stronger, thicker and
longer. The best way to ensure that you use it on a daily basis
is by keeping it handy – keep it in your kitchen as well as in
your bathroom. The moisturizing oil can also be used as a
conditioner or you can heat it and use it for hot-oil treatment.

As one age, the structure of the hair undergoes a slow change,


thereby making it weaker and resulting in hair loss and greying.
Genetic or hereditary problems are cited as the main reason for
hair loss. Other causes of hair loss include pollution, excessive
use of hair products, hair colour, unhealthy lifestyle and eating
habits. Using olive oil for hair growth is perhaps the best
option for hair loss.
Benefits of olive oil: Removes Dandruff. Dandruff comes from a
scalp which is dry, and flaky. Lemon helps loosen dandruff while
olive oil moisturizes the new, exfoliated layer of skin. To get
rid of that scurf, mix equal amounts of olive oil, lemon juice
and water. Massage into damp scalp, leave on for 20 minutes,
rinse and shampoo. This dandruff-fighting treatment should be
used anytime in alternate weeks. Too much acidity from lemon
could cause your hair to grey prematurely. Treats Split ends.
Winters make your hair prone to breakage, splitting, and frizzy
flyaways giving your sleek haircut a messy and unkempt look. This
is a time when you can use olive oil for hair that is smooth, has
weight and moisture and is problem-free. Just smooth a little
olive oil on your fingers and run them through your hair after
you've styled it to give your ends and fly away the kiss off.
Strengthens hair. You are in love with your regular conditioner
which means you are in love with all the chemicals in it too.
Olive oil could easily substitute it for bringing moisture back
to your hair and make it look shiny. It is free of chemicals,
rich in vitamin A, E, and antioxidants. It works by protecting
the keratin in hair and sealing the moisture in. It is also
believed to remove sebum buildup which blocks the new follicles
and hinders hair growth.

Scope and Limitations

The study is limited only in using white onion and coconut oil
on human hair.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

COCONUT OIL or copra oil is an edible oil extracted from the


kernel or meat of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm
(cocos nucifera). It has various applications. Because of its
high saturated fat content, it is slow to oxidize and thus,
resistance to acidification, lasting up to six months.

Coconut oil is a heart-healthy food that can help keep your body
running smoothly and efficiently in a number of ways. The oil
contains a combination of fatty acids, medium chain fatty acids
(MCFAs), which contain antioxidant properties and help in the
absorption of other minerals, according to Healthline.

OLIVE OIL It is an oil pressed from ripe olives, used in cooking,


medicines, soap, etc.

WHITE ONION( Allium cepa, sweet onion)is a cultivar of dry onion.


It has a pure white papery skin and a sweet, mild white flesh.
Similar to red onions, due to the high sugar content, they have a
short shelf life, lasting up to 2 days, or if refrigerated, they
can last up to a month.

White onions are bulbous vegetables that belong to the allium


plant family, which also houses shallots and scallions. White
onions share all the nutritional properties and health benefits
found in red onions, but are generally sweeter and less pungent
than the latter. The sweetness of white onion comes from the
vegetable’s higher sugar content, an article on the Health
Extremist website says. According to the article, both white and
red onion varieties are considered superfoods due to their
strong anti-carcinogenic, antiviral, antibacterial, and
antioxidant properties.

Review of Related Literatures and Studies

This chapter contains some literatures and studies that are


related to the research.

RELATED LITERATURES

Olive oil

This review describes the olive oil production process to obtain


extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) enriched in polyphenol and
byproducts generated as sources of antioxidants. EVOO is obtained
exclusively by mechanical and physical processes including
collecting, washing, and crushing of olives, malaxation of olive
paste, centrifugation, storage, and filtration. The effect of
each step is discussed to minimize losses of polyphenols from
large quantities of wastes. Phenolic compounds including phenolic
acids, alcohols, secoiridoids, lignans, and flavonoids are
characterized in olive oil mill wastewater, olive pomace, storage
byproducts, and filter cake. Different industrial pilot plant
processes are developed to recover phenolic compounds from olive
oil byproducts with antioxidant and bioactive properties. The
technological information compiled in this review will help olive
oil producers to improve EVOO quality and establish new processes
to obtain valuable extracts enriched in polyphenols from
byproducts with food ingredient applications.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil treats damaged hair by penetrating into hair fibers


and acting as a moisturizer. When coconut oil is used as a pre-
wash and post-wash grooming product, it can reduce protein loss
for both damaged and healthy hair. The lauric acid present in
coconut oil has an affinity for hair proteins and because of its
low molecular weight it can penetrate the hair fibers and prevent
hair damage.
In the 1930s, Dr. Weston Price discovered that the South Pacific
Islanders incorporated high quantities of coconut in their diet
but remained healthy and fit, and there was a low incidence of
heart disease. In 1981, researchers learned that Polynesian
communities whose primary source of food was coconut remained in
excellent cardiovascular health. Coconut oil is naturally high
in medium chain triglycerides and lauric acid. While coconut oil
is one of the few known natural sources of lauric acid, it’s also
found in mother’s milk, increasing immune strength of infants.
More recently, research shows that coconut oil can support
cardiovascular health, immune health, skin health, hair health,
weight management and performance enhancement.

White onion

Various diseases are common in Pakistani population and major


reason for their prevalence is the lack of modern health
facilities. Current review was aimed to find the potential
medicinal uses of Allium cepa, which is a culinary herb. A
number of studies have proven its potential use against human
pathogenic organisms. Its extract and powder was found to
have inhibitory activity against tumor cells. Moreover
scientifically proven hypoglycemic, cardioprotective and
hypolipidemic activities suggest its potential use in
diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. It is also useful to
reduce the risk of bone injuries especially in females. Onion
is a rich source of flavonoids, polyphenols, organic sulfur,
saponins and many other secondary metabolites, which are
mainly responsible for its medicinal activities. Its organic
sulfur compounds, which contribute for its different
medicinal potentials are sensitive towards cooking; moreover
this sensitivity is also variety dependant which means it’s
more beneficial in its raw form. On the basis of reviewed
literature it is concluded that it possesses significant
beneficial health effects and its incorporation in daily food
especially in raw form will provide protection against many
diseases.

Coconut oil

Recent research has indicated that not all saturated fats


increase the risk of heart disease. Studies show that virgin
coconut oil can improve cholesterol levels by decreasing low-
density cholesterol and increasing high-density cholesterol in
serum and tissues. Research shows that lauric acid can increase
our body’s production of monolaurin, enhancing anti-bacterial
protection.

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This chapter contains the materials and equipment that has been
used during the experiment, the research design and the
procedure conducted in the study.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

In the experiment the researchers needed a bottle of coconut oil


and olive oil, 1 white onion, a rectangular container and a
spatula to mix the materials.

PROCEDURE

First we prepared the olive oil and coconut oil and we mixed it
in a bowl and then we grated the white onion. After that, we
squeezed the white onion so we can get the extract. And last we
mixed them all together and we put it in a clean container.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION


This chapter contains analysis, presentation and interpretation
of collected data in the experiment conducted.

Radius of inhibition of bacteria

The table shows that the first three trials did not produce any
bacteria that’s why there is no radius of inhibition. The
researcher doesn’t not able to apply the fruit extract in the
said trials. This means that the first three trials failed.

RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

Our product which is the mixture of different oils such as olive


oil, coconut oil and white onion extract. Our product can make
you hair smooth-looking, shining, and fast growing hair because
of the different oils that included in our product. By using our
product every day you’ll recognize that your hair is smoother
now, shiner, and pretty long in just 3 weeks. We let our
classmate to use our product for 1 month. Sigrid one of our
classmate that tried our product says, “It’s very good. It helps
me to grow my baby hair faster than what I usually use every day.
It also made my hair so smooth that everyone is looking at me
like they wanted to ask what’s hair treatment I use to archive my
hair today”. In that feedback we knew that our product really
work.
