prophetic, Franciscan, Catholic community welcoming all people through prayer and outreach.
We extend a special welcome to everyone visiting the Shrine for the first time.
Greetings of peace.
I periodically use the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (usccb.org). This week I
discovered a section on that website entitled “Financial Reporting.” Among the various interesting items in that
section is a set of links to audited financial statements since 2009. It’s possible that this section has always been
there and I have never noticed it before. I am guessing that it is brand new. What a step forward this is! In many
ways the Church’s policies and procedures around finances run parallel to the Church’s policies and procedures
in handling abuse cases. This level of transparency at that level of the Church hierarchy is a breath of fresh air.
We all know that there is still a lot of work to do, but let’s hope that this is a foreshadowing of what is to come.
At the Shrine, once a month in the bulletin, we include a Statement of Revenues and Expenses. Committing to
doing that once a month is an interesting experience because, as everyone who handles money knows, not every
month has good news! Some months are downright embarrassing. But all of the feedback that I get from people
is that you like the transparency. Also, please know that I really appreciate questions and observations about
those monthly statements, whether you have a finance background or not. My email is:

Franciscan Dinner and Pope Francis Award 2019
Plans are well underway for our Franciscan Dinner and Pope Francis Award. Please plan to join us at our new venue,
The Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 for an evening to celebrate and support the
extraordinary work of the Franciscan Friars on Arch Street. This year the focus is on the women we serve –the poor,
the alienated and those who seek compassion and acceptance.
We are proud to boast of this year’s Pope Francis Award recipient, Regina M. Pisa, Chairman Emeritus Goodwin, and
one of the most accomplished professional woman in Boston. Regina is a leader and innovator. She has been a
transformational business leader at Goodwin, while also being a passionate advocate for women and children. Regina
lives her Catholic values as a philanthropist who is committed to social justice and taking action with courage, vision,
compassion and humility.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Ms. Lorrie Higgins will serve as Honorary Chairs. Jo-Anne and Jim Gallagher are
graciously serving as co-chairs. They have put together a Dinner Committee of all-star business, financial and
community leaders. A heartfelt thank you to each of you.
Our fundraising goal this year is an ambitious $1.2 million. To date we have raised $996,950. If you would like
information about becoming a sponsor, please see Father Thomas E. Conway, OFM, or Maryanne Rooney-Hegan,
director of development 617-778-1645. Thank you.
