Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary Time
The Shrine continues to support UNITE HERE, Local 26, in their ongoing labor dispute against the
following hotels: Ritz Carlton, the Sheraton Boston, the W Hotel Boston, Aloft Boston Seaport
District, the Element Boston Seaport District, the Westin Boston Waterfront and the Westin Copley
Place. The dignity of workers is an integral part of Catholic Social Teaching. On May 15, 1891,
Pope Leo XIII promulgated the encyclical Rerum Novarum. In that 127 year-old document, the
Holy Father says that the Church “does her best to enlist the services of all classes in discussing and
endeavoring to further in the most practical way, the interests of the working classes…” In 2018 in
Boston, this includes protecting the rights and dignity of hotel workers.
The friars and staff of the Shrine do our best to act, according the tradition of our faith, in the best
interests of vulnerable, alienated, and those on the margins. We invite you to dream broadly and
imaginatively about who those people are, and how we as a faith community might help them.
Our goal is $71,000 for 71 years on Arch Street. Every gift we receive on #Giving Tuesday will support
our outreach ministries. Simply go to stanthonyshrine.org on November 27, and make your gift.
You may also text your gift. Text Donate to 617-712-2233. It is that easy! If you prefer, come to the
Shrine on #Giving Tuesday, November 27, to make your gift in person. Our friars and members of the
Shrine community will be in the lobby to greet you and accept your gift. We invite you to be as generous
as you can. Please know your gift truly makes a difference in the lives of all those whom we serve.
Upcoming Trips
The Shrine will be open Annual Bus Trip to La Salette

the Shrine through a Charitable Rollover gift. Contact the administrator of your plan and ask that
your distribution be a charitable rollover to the Shrine.
• Matching Gifts – A corporate matching gift is a tremendous way to increase your personal gift to
the Shrine. We encourage you to take advantage of your employer’s matching gift program.
Thank you for all you do to help us live out the Gospel in Boston. Please continue to pray for all those
whom we serve with love and compassion. If you have questions about making a gift, please contact
Maryanne Rooney-Hegan at (617) 542-6440 ext. 115.

Brother Maganzini, OFM nominated for Bishop Cheverus Medal
Every three years parishes and institutions in the Archdiocese of Boston are invited to nominate a person
from the ministry for the Bishop Cheverus Medal (the First Bishop of Boston). The medal is awarded to a
person for exemplary service given in the name of the Lord.
This year, the Shrine was eligible to nominate someone. Fr. Tom and Fr. Frank immediately agreed that
the recipient from the Shrine would be Brother John Maganzini, OFM. For 22 years Brother John, Mags,
has served the Arch Street community in a quiet and unassuming way. He is a spiritual director to many
people, a friend to countless people and an eager participant in all our ministries. In many ways, Brother
Mags has become the face of St. Anthony Shrine. In addition to this public ministry, Brother John served
the friar community as Vicar for 12 years and cares for the friars in many ways. Brother John embodies
the Franciscan Spirit and the Spirit of the Shrine--All Are Welcome!
We know you will join us in congratulating and thanking John. The medal will be presented by Cardinal
O'Malley at a special Daytime Prayer Service at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden on Sunday,
November 25th at 2 PM.
