    WHAT IS AN EDUCATED PERSON?

    By Johnny Cervantes

    Lee Kuan Yew, the first prime mister of Singapore, said that having an Education is
    one thing, but being educated is another thing. So, the most important question to
    answer is, who are do we consider educated Filipinos nowadays? Good morning to each
    and everyone, my name is Johnny Cervantes, and today I will talk about my view of
    educated Filipinos based from selection written by Francisco Benitez.

    In the last paragraph oh his essay, he concluded that there are three characteristics
    to be the evidence of the educated Filipino. These are power to do, power to connect
    and power to be. He believed that these qualities would distinguished who really the
    educated filipinos are.

    In Bloom’s Taxonomy of knowledge, creating is the highest form of knowledge. We


    can say that if a person can create something good out of his knowledge, then he
    attained its purpose. Francisco Benitez, reiterate that power to do is the first evidence
    of an educated filipino. He stated also that no Filipino has right to be considered
    educated unless he is prepared and ready to take an active and useful part in the work,
    life, and progress of our country as well as in the progress of our world.

    The second quality is power to connect. Connection is very essential, it is how


    communicate with other people, how we act upon them and how we feel upon them.
    Connection to our country should see first in the life of educated filipino. He should
    connect to his/her family, community, society and country. He should not also
    disconnect from any traditions, culture and belief we have as filipino.

    The third and last quality is power to be. Being is more important than doing. I think,
    of all qualities he mentioned, the moral and attitude of a person makes him an educated
    person. As they say that, attitude is always greater than knowledge because in life there
    are many situations where knowledge fail but attitude can handle everything.

    As for me, I believed that these qualities make us an educated person. Let us reflect
    and ask ourselves, are we really an educated person? The answer is yours. Thank you
    very much!
