    The original name of Mindoro was Ma-I, but when foreigner came to bring their merchandize,
    they called it “Mina de Oro” due to lots of gold found in the island and later on named it Mindoro.
    Hanunuo Mangyans
    Is believed to be the only ethnic group inhabiting the area. Hanunuo is not the name itself but
    added to emphasize that they are the true Mangyan.
    Forms of Music in Mindoro
     Ambahan – a lyrical chant of the pure Mangyan
     Ngayung – kind of ritual chanting that expresses their tradition and beliefs. Music plays an
    important part in doing this ritual.
     Iyaya – a lullaby song
    The Ambahan
    It is a lyrical chant of the pure Mangyan, composed of seven syllables in one line that rhymes and ranges
    from 34 to 134 lines. It is most often presented as a chant without a determined musical pitch or
    accompaniment by musical instrument.
    The Ambahan uses Mellismatic style of singing.
    Mellismatic means singing a syllable with several notes.
    Aim of Ambahan
    Is to show uniqueness of chanting . If ever the Mangyan likes an ambahan, they rewrite it on a “Luka”.
