Moms Share Hospitals That Allow Husbands at the Labor and Delivery Room
Birth, like conception, is an experience best shared by both parents. But check your hospital's policy
by Rachel Perez Nov 14, 2018

Needless to say, fathers are essential in childbirth. They play a vital part in welcoming their baby into this world, not
just giving their pregnant partner emotional support but also taking an active role when caring and parenting their
child. Being present during birth also benefits the dads-to-be — it's a life-changing experience for them, too. How to
make your husband your childbirth partner:

1. Ask your husband if he wants it.

• Even if you want your partner to be there, he may not be totally game about the idea. Some men are squirmish
about blood; other even faint at the sight of it. If you really want him to be there, you need to work on convincing
your partner early on that being with your all the way 'till you have your baby in your arms is best for everyone.

2. Consult your doctor about it.

• If having hubby by your side during birth is a non-negotiable for you, run it by your obstetrician-gynecologist
during your first prenatal checkup. You can always switch to one who supports your stand. Having a doula might
help you convince your doctor how essential dads are during childbirth.

3. Check with your birth hospital.

• Your doctor may allow having your husband there with you, but some hospitals do not. A lot of large hospitals
do allow partners or companions during labor and delivery but with conditions. (Some lying-in clinics also allow it,
but again check its policy.)

Non-Medicinal Pain Relief Techniques

The birth environment is more than the physical attributes; it is also about the physiological and
psychological environment of the expectant woman. Proponents of natural childbirth favor non-medicinal pain relief
methods to help expectant women relax during the delivery process.
Hypnosis, for example, is a process that is gradually gaining a foothold in the birth environments of expectant women
in the United States. Expectant women are taught to hypnotize themselves while in labor through techniques such as
deep breathing, visualization or in some cases, special hypnosis scripts. In addition to that, expectant women are
encouraged to develop more positive perceptions and even a more positive way of talking about labor and the birth
process.

Hypnosis allows expectant women to relax subsequently preventing the production of hormones that cause pain by
causing the body to fight the birth process.

Water, Tubs, and Hydrotherapy

Immersion in a tub for the relief of pain during labor is not new, but the number of hospitals that are including tubs in
their birth suites is definitely growing. Many hospitals now offer this option.
Hydrotherapy during the delivery process is also trending in the United States. In fact, the birth environment of many
hospitals and birth centers now includes whirlpool baths. Hydrotherapy uses warm/hot water to achieve therapeutic
results.

Warm water is known to raise the temperature of the body subsequently improving the circulation of blood in the
body. This may help reduce the blood pressure of expectant women and may even eliminate the risk of fluid retention
and swelling.

Research has also established that hydrotherapy can help in bringing about a shorter labor through facilitating the
dilation of the cervix. Hydrotherapy also offers increased comfort for the expectant woman.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide has been around for a while, but it is increasingly used as a relaxer for moms during labor. Inhaled
through a mask, the mixture of 50 percent nitrous gas and 50 percent oxygen provides relief during contractions.
Three hospitals in Colorado now offer nitrous oxide, or laughing gas as it’s also known: Castle Rock Adventist,
Littleton Adventist, and University of Colorado Health Science Center. Northrup says about 10 percent of their
deliveries now use nitrous oxide. Although many of those moms do still end up getting an epidural, nitrous oxide
allows them to labor longer without it.

Birth Slings, Bars, and Balls

Birthing balls, bars, and slings allow women extra support and mobility during labor and may contribute to a shorter,
less painful labor, possibly reducing the need for medical interventions. Birth slings (fabric attached to a carabiner
which attaches to the ceiling) have been used in Europe for a while, but are growing in popularity in the United
States. Currently, Castle Rock Adventist is the only Colorado hospital equipped for birth slings.

Delayed Umbilical Cord Clamping

This fast growing trend is expected to continue to rise now that the American Congress of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists (AGOG) has given its stamp of approval. AGOG recommends delaying the clamping of the umbilical
cord for 30 to 60 seconds in vigorous pre-term and term births, citing infant benefits such as increased hemoglobin
levels and iron stores and the reduced need for transfusions.
