I can say that I truly learned a lot from the IMCI Training it does not only taught me how to
manage the illness of the child but also it teaches me how I should properly act being on that situation
and it was emphasized how important having good communication skills are when you talk to a caregiver
of the child in order to know the problem of the child and have an idea where you should focus further.
However, it`s still important to assess the other health conditions of the child. The danger signs was truly
the most essential to assess since it is where you can decide if it needs urgent referral or not. I also learned
the common illness and usually the cause of mortality of the children from two months to 5 years old and
from birth to two months. Despite the decline in child mortality, every year millions children die before
they reach their fifth birthday. When the IMCI was developed, a majority of these deaths was caused by
just five preventable and treatable conditions such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria ,measles and
malnutrition. Often, those deaths are caused by a combination of the above conditions. Many of
childhood deaths could be avoided if those children received appropriate and timely care. In addition,
three out of four episodes of childhood illness are caused by these five conditions. I also learned the IMCI
has also a lot of benefits such as it addresses major child health problems ,responds to demand ,promotes
prevention as well as cure ,Is cost-effective ,promotes cost saving and improves equity .
In IMCI case management process ,all sick children aged up to five years of age are examined
for general danger signs and all young infants are examined for signs of very severe disease. These signs
indicate the need for immediate referral or admission to hospital. The children and infants are then
assessed for main symptoms. For older children the main symptoms include cough or difficulty breathing,
diarrhoea, fever, and ear infection. For young infants, the main symptoms include local bacterial infection,
diarrhoea, and jaundice. In addition, all sick children are routinely checked for nutritional and
immunization status, in high HIV setting for HIV status, and for other potential problems. Only a limited
number of clinical signs are used, selected on the basis of their sensitivity and specificity to detect disease.
A combination of individual signs leads to a child's classification within one or more symptom groups
rather than a diagnosis. IMCI management procedures use a limited number of essential drugs and
encourage active participation of caregivers in the treatment of children. An essential component of IMCI
is the counselling of caregivers regarding home care, appropriate feeding and fluids, and when to return
to the clinic immediately or for follow-up.
It was a bit challenging experience for me since you really have to spend so much time
throughout the whole training. What I like about the practice part, is that it really explains to you why
your answer was wrong. In doing the training, you are also given a freedom in managing your own time
since you are not given a time limit upon answering the practices and test which I also really like about. I
can say that the time I spent in this training was really worth it since I really learned a lot from it.
