A quote from Abraham Maslow, “If you plan on being anything less than you are capable of
being, you will probably be unhappy all the days of your life." A study by Correa-Torres, et al.
(2018), visually-impaired students or students with vision loss experiencing difficulty in classroom
accessibility should be provided by a support system such as teachers, administration, disability
support services, responsible for minimizing the likelihood of eye-deficiency and practices in
developing usefulness of other senses like hearing in order to learn efficiently. Teaching visually-
impaired students to adapt to their environment by offering assistance to help better their
experiences and feel comfortable around the classroom. Visually-impaired students have a better
chance to maximize their capability in learning by enhancing their auditory skills and classroom
adaptation. Furthermore, managing an effective strategy for visually-impaired students is necessary
to ensure academic success.
Adkins (2016) stated that "The development of effective listening skills enhances the lives of
all students with visual impairments." Visually-impaired students should be offered with
appropriate instructional support to develop active interaction. Visually-impaired students lack a
support system to be an efficient learner and to improve social awareness in the classroom as a vital
component for safety (Durkel, n.d.). Auditory or listening skills are a valuable element for
promoting social development and visualization. According to Willings (2019), the development of
the auditory skills of visually-impaired students is crucial in developing an understanding of their
environment.
Classroom adaptation is important to remind that they have the potential to learn efficiently
using their vision. According to Gissara (2017), "Since they may not be aware of objects or people
moving across their path they may need to rely on their other senses to be aware of their
environment". Wearing eyeglasses could help students with poor eyesight when they are in school.
According to Dr. Frederick (2017), wearing eyeglasses is a corrective eye option; it could protect
the eyes from particles that can harm a person's vision like dust or wind. Sitting at the front is
another solution for improving student's learning because it minimizes the distance for the student
to visually orient.
Students who have poor eyesight can have a hard time to study but somehow, as stated, there
are solutions for them to study well despite their conditions. Someone with sight problems can
become isolated from others more easily while others are self-sufficient and may not need help.
Nonetheless, whether a visually impaired student asks for assistance, don't hesitate to help. A
support system is valuable to be able to improve their social awareness and interactions in the
classroom. Apart from having a support system, using an appropriate device like eyeglasses is some
other ways for them to rely upon their other senses for them to be aware of their environment.
