I used to think… Now, I think… Name Alexandra Treise

The purpose of this routine is to help you reflect on your thinking about a topic or topics, and to identify how your ideas have developed. When you
started this class, you all had some initial ideas about it. Those ideas may have changed. Be prepared to share your thinking with others.

What have I learned about Constructivism, Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, Place-Based Learning, Service Learning, Upcycling,
Breaker Ed and Maker Ed? Make a statement about before and after, and reference specific details (What made you change your ideas?).

I Used to Think… Now, I Think…

Constructivism: I used to think constructivism was building something. Constructivism: I know that constructivism is crucial for students critical
thinking skills and looking at things from other’s perspectives.
Project-Based Learning: I used to think project-based learning was learning a
topic and creating a project to demonstrate what was learned. Project-Based Learning: I now know that project-based learning is using
projects to teach or learn. The learning occurs during the process of the

learning would occur when they finished the question. Problem-Based Learning: I know that problem-based learning is collectively
finding a problem within the school or community and coming up with a way

a garden for wild-life as well as the community really helped me understand
this method of teaching.
Place-Based Learning: I had no idea what place-based learning was.

Service Learning: I know that service learning is finding an issue within the
school or community and creating a plan on how to help that issue. The
learning occurs when students are selflessly thinking about how to solve this
issue that may not benefit them, then implementing those ideas. The group
work we did when we talked about service learning and about what would
qualify as service learning helped me understand this teaching method the
most.

Upcycling: I used to think that upcycling was taking something old and making Upcycling: I know that upcycling is still taking something old and making it

Breaker Ed: I used to think that breaker-ed was just breaking apart a piece of

machinery. The learning occurs when students look up pieces that they don’t
know and learn about it. It’s learning about what the purpose of this machine
was and how it was used as well as who may have used it. Actually doing the
breaker-ed is what helped me the most in understanding breaker-ed.
Maker Ed: I used to think that maker ed was taking what was broken from
maker ed and using it to make something new. Maker Ed: I know that maker ed taking something and making into something
different. I learned that this process for maker ed can include other learning
methods, such as upcycling, breaker-ed,
