STUDY PLAN
I have fostered a burning desire to become a MA TESOL degree holder in USSH for
several years. In order to achieve success in this program, it is essential to establish
specific goals, to make comprehensive mission statements and to anticipate challenges
and solutions. One special note is that I am a student in MA TESOL 2018A who has
finished one year in this program; therefore, the study plan below is proposed for merely
the remaining period.
Goal-setting
It is said that without goals and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that sets sail with
no destination. As regards long-term goals, I aim at working as an adjunct lecturer
teaching language skills at tertiary education level and co-operating with some teachers to
open classes of IELTS and Communication at reasonable fees. Paradoxical as it may
seems, Nunan (2003) reveals that in ELT, private centers in Vietnam develop more than
public schools. Thus, I want to employ methods learned from various centers and from
TESOL program to help learners in some state universities. Nevertheless, students still
struggle as learning in many private centers due to ineffective methods and high tuitions;
therefore, working with some like-minded teachers to create an optimal learning
environment for students is also my priority. For those reasons, MA TESOL is
indispensable to equip myself with sufficient knowledge and teaching experience.
Furthermore, focusing on teaching more than researching, I plan to choose Minor thesis
of the MA program.
In alignment these ultimate goals, I am going to strive for short-term goals. Concerning
the MA degree, since I have virtually completed 12 subjects of the course, I am working
towards proposal, thesis, second foreign language and some articles. Initially, I need to
1
make some adjustments to the proposal such as literature review and tests prior to
submission at the end of this month. After the oral defense, I plan to take judges’
comments into account and discuss these ideas with my supervisor for upcoming steps.
Following this, a timeline for the purpose of completing the study is set as follows. A
notion is that this is an experimental research of linguistics.
Table
Time Tasks
The last week of December 2019 Pilot stage
Two first weeks of January 2020 Adjustment of teaching materials, tests and
quest questionnaire
From the second of February 2020 to the - Experimental teaching to Experimental
second week of April 2020 (8 weeks) Group
- Traditional teaching to Control Group
May 2020 to July 2020 Backup courses
Two first weeks of August 2020 Data analysis
From August 2020 to December 2020 Thesis writing
I predict to conduct the pilot of the study for a week before expending two weeks on
modifying teaching materials, tests and questionnaire. Then, after Lunar New Year
Holiday, I continue the research with experimental teaching to experimental group and
traditional teaching to control group for two months. Nevertheless, two upcoming months
are still spared for another treatment in case any problems arise. Data analysis and thesis
writing are expected to continue in four eventual months of 2020. With respect to second
foreign language, I intend to engage in Chinese courses and attain a HSK4 certificate
from November 2019 to November 2020 after I pass the proposal defense. As I find
Chinese beneficial and stimulating, I am going to spend roughly two hours learning this
2
language on a daily basis. Finally, I target at adjusting some articles I wrote in
Technology and Culture courses and send them to some Journals, namely VietTesol,
CALICO and Language Learning and Technology.
Personal vision
In the context of globalization, the demand for gaining high level of English competency
has been significantly growing in Vietnam, but teachers’ and students’ language
proficiency remains inadequate (Le, 2017). In fact, numerous Vietnamese students are
not able to communicate fluently in English despite many years of exposure (Le, 2018).
Thus, there is a need for English teachers to make an unremitting effort to develop their
expertise in ELT. As a teacher, dedicating myself to this career path, I plan to enhance
my language and teaching methods and spend time on researching and supporting my
students. I desire to a make a contribution to helping many Vietnamese students achieve
good language competency so that they can grasp future opportunities.
