Lesson 3 – grammar

gēn
with (companionship)
The preposition 跟 introduces the partner one does things with.
The “跟 + companion” expression appears before the verb phrase as do all

prepositional phrases. The adverb 一起 (yìqǐ) is commonly associated with 跟 .
我常常跟哥哥去看棒球比赛。
Wǒ chángcháng gēn gēge qù kàn bàngqiú bǐsài.
I often go to baseball games with my brother.
我跟朋友在餐厅吃饭。
Wǒ gēn péngyǒu zài cāntīng chīfàn.
I'm having a meal at the restaurant with some friends.
我周末要跟同学一起去逛淡水老街。
Wǒ zhōumò yào gēn tóngxué yìqǐ qù guàng Dànshuǐ lǎojiē.
I'll visit Danshui Old Street on the weekend with some classmates

bǐjiào
more / -er (Implicit Comparison)
The adverb 比较 conveys implicit comparison. The comparison is interpreted

according to the context.
In Mainland China, 比较 can be an adverb meaning "quite, rather" without a

sense of comparison. For example:
他的法文说得比较好。(Tā de Fǎwén shuō de bǐjiào hǎo. )
He speaks French rather well.
In Taiwan, 比较 always indicates a comparison. For example:
哥哥和我，我比较高。(Gēgē hàn wǒ, wǒ bǐjiào gāo.)
Between me and my brother, I am taller.
今天比较热。
Jīntiān bǐjiào rè.
Today is hotter.
越南餐厅很远，坐地铁比较快。
Yuènán cāntīng hěn yuǎn, zuò dìtiě bǐjiào kuài.
The Vietnamese restaurant is very far. Taking the subway is faster.
在我们家，姐姐比较会做饭。
Zài wǒmen jiā, jiějie bǐjiào huì zuòfàn.
In our family, my sister cooks better.

The prices of these two brands are almost the same.

duì…lái shuō
As far as...is concerned
With this pattern, the sentence presents a statement which applies only to the
object of 对 . The statement may not be true to others.
对我来说，这家店的早餐又便宜又好吃。
Duì wǒ lái shuō, zhè jiā diàn de zǎocān yòu piányi yòu hǎo chī.
For me, the breakfast at this restaurant is cheap and delicious.
那个地方对他来说太远了，不方便。
Nàge dìfāng duì tā lái shuō tài yuǎn le, bù fāngbiàn.
That place is too far for him. It is inconvenient.
对我姐姐来说，那个工作很有意思。
Duì wǒ jiějie lái shuō, nàge gōngzuò hěn yǒuyìsi.
That job is very interesting for my sister.

Estella: 我想去那家店买一些东西。你要跟我一起去吗？
Estella: Wǒ xiǎng qù nà jiā diàn mǎi yìxiē dōngxi. Nǐ yào gēn wǒ yìqǐ qù ma?
Estella: I want to go to that store to buy some things. Do you want to go with me?
本: 好。你要买什么？
Ben: Hǎo. Nǐ yào mǎi shénme?
Ben: Ok. What do you want to buy?
Estella: 日常生活用品。
Estella: Rìcháng shēnghuó yòngpǐn.
Estella: Daily necessities.

Estella: 这个洗发精在促销，现在买很划算。

Estella: Zhège xǐfàjīng zài cùxiāo, xiànzài mǎi hěn huásuàn.

Ben: Which facial cleanser do you think is better? (Holding two different brands

Estella: 对我来说，这两个牌子差不多。

Estella: Duì wǒ lái shuō, zhè liǎng ge páizi chàbùduō.
Estella: For me, these two brands are about the same.

Ben: Zhège yáshuā kàn qǐlái hěn búcuò.
Ben: This toothbrush looks not too bad.
Estella: 而且在特价 , 很划算。

Estella: Érqiě zài tèjià, hěn huásuàn.
Estella: Also, it's on sale. It's a good deal.
本: 这个是什么？
Ben: Zhège shì shénme?
Ben: What's this?
Estella: 擦手巾。洗完手以后，擦手用的。
Estella: Cāshǒujīn. Xǐ wán shǒu yǐhòu, cā shǒu yòng de.
Estella: It's a towel. We use it to dry our hands after we wash hands.
本: 这里真的有很多很可爱的东西。
Ben: Zhèlǐ zhēn de yǒu hěn duō hěn kě'ài de dōngxi.
Ben: There are lots of lovely things here.
Estella 自己去结账 , 本继续逛。

Estella zìjǐ qù jiézhàng, Ben jìxù guàng.
Estella goes to buy her things, Ben keeps walking around.
Estella: 我东西买好了 , 我们走吧。

Estella: Wǒ dōngxi mǎi hǎo le, wǒmen zǒu ba.
Estella: I have got everything. Let's go.
本: 谢谢你带我来淡水。
Ben: Xièxie nǐ dài wǒ lái Dànshuǐ.
Ben: Thanks for bringing me to Danshui.
Estella: 不客气。
Estella: Búkèqi.
Estella: Don't mention it.
