I have had many goals that I have set for
myself when I started this journey in wedding

them I have yet to. One of those goals was to get in
Rangefinder Magazine. It was a magazine that I would
read monthly (and every time I would attend WPPI). It
was filled with images and words from people whom I
had looked up to. Who inspired me. Then a few months
ago, I was contacted by the team at Rangefinder to be

Punctuating
Motion
By Libby Peterson

Ever since creative rep Art &

Motion turned me on to Russ and
Reyn’s portfolio, I knew I wanted
to feature the New York City-
based fashion and advertising
photo team here. While it wasn’t
easy narrowing down their
awesomely quirky portfolio to just
one image, this one ultimately
won me over with its graphic
quality, velvety tones and smooth
yet crisp lighting (they swear by
Broncolor). This image was part
of the duo’s “Punctuation” series
for the Scandinavian fashion line
Mjölk, which let them entertain
their fascination with typography.
Casting flexible, dynamic models
was key (and nabbing a female
model with an Irish-dancing
background didn’t hurt). “The crazy
thing is, she showed up to the
shoot deathly ill and we told her
what she would be doing,” Russ
and Reyn say. “She said she would
try, and then proceeded to nail
the shot on her first take.” Leaping
from a box behind the black beach
ball, she contorted herself to form
a question mark as the male model
curved into a closed parenthesis.
“The types of shots that excite
us are those with a sense of
movement,” the photographers
say. “There is something ethereal
about capturing a body in mid-
motion.”

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Getting Real
Peter Lindbergh’s name might not be as recognizable as others, but the German fashion photographer’s impressive
repertoire of portraits and new book of images back up his solid rapport in the industry. A sequel to his 1997 edition
that covered his work shot between the 1980s and ‘90s, Images of Women II: 2005-2014 (Schirmer/Mosel) tracks
his most recent images. The powerful, often mysterious portraits—of the likes of Uma Thurman, Tilda Swinton, Reese
Witherspoon and Sofia Coppola—showcase how Lindbergh’s signature style captures true personality from the
models, actresses and other creatives who pose for him, beyond the bright lights of Hollywood glamour.

EXHIBITION

Portraits by a
Pop Art Icon
Andy Warhol is most known for pioneering the pop
art movement—commenting on celebrity culture and
consumerism by using silk-screening and printmaking
techniques—though not everyone knows his photography.
Sticking primarily to the Polaroid Big Shot (which the
company kept in production especially for him), Warhol
carried a camera everywhere, also using his portraits to
produce his silkscreens. The Phoenix Art Museum will be
celebrating Warhol’s portraits, created between the 1940s
and 1980s. In addition to some of his most well-known work,
the exhibit will include Polaroids of him in drag as well as
family photographs from the artist’s more formative years.
“Andy Warhol: Portraits” will be showing from
March 4 through June 21.

Foster Children
Seeing a need to provide professional portraits to foster
children, the Heart Gallery organizes photographers across
the country to volunteer their time and skills. The Heart
Gallery’s founder, Diane Granito, remembers from her work
at the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department
that many of the generic portraits of foster children were
“as inspiring as a driver’s license photo,” she says. With an
emphasis on providing portraits to older foster children and
siblings, the Heart Gallery reports that many of the children
find permanent homes with adoptive parents. In addition

to its shooting services, the nonprofit organizes a traveling

across 46 states. Photographers interested in volunteering

WPPI was founded in 1978 to serve the needs of wedding

Three Shades of Gray

Nashville-area photography team Zach and Jody Gray not only
have the business of wedding photography down to a science, but they’re
bona fide lighting experts to boot. Here, Zach breaks down his setups
behind three images.

Smoke in Your Eyes

Zach enlisted his actor/musician friend Jason Bynum as his subject

for the sole purpose of creating personal work to keep his portfolio
fresh.
With Bynum positioned in front of a gray seamless background set up
in the Gray’s garage, Zach says he was going for a split-lighting look with
”a gritty, textured skin tone and cool, ethereal smoke effect.”
Using a 27-inch Elinchrom beauty dish with a 25-degree grid because
“it creates this dead spot in the center so the light goes on evenly,” Zach
added no diffusion, allowing the dish’s silver interior to create punchiness
and texture. “I put that light really close to his face just outside the frame of
the shot camera right, and angled down slightly,” Zach says.
On camera left, he added a black flag to absorb light and keep it
focused. “When you’re shooting indoors, naturally some of that light’s
going to bounce off the walls and fill in the shadows, and I didn’t want
that,” he says. “I wanted crazy contrast.”
The smoke effect was the tricky part—naturally, there wasn’t quite
enough when he shot the subject to create the texture Zach was looking
for. He asked Bynum to step out of the frame, and blow cigarette smoke
into it, while Zach used his back button focus to capture the smoke.
In post-production, Zach took the best of both frames (one portrait,
one smoke) and composited them to create the final shot.

Stylized Fence Hop

Zach found a sunny, side-lit fence a block away from his home for this
promotional shoot for the band Likewise. Zach says the guys in the band
worried the image would look too soft and “country,” but the photographer
assured them he was going for a flash-heavy, moody “painted-on” look.
Using two main light sources did the trick: First, a 59-inch Zeppelin Octabank
from Westcott at camera left (from the direction of the sun), which Zach says
focuses and “puts out the most stunning, beautiful light.”
To fill in the shadows caused by the aggressive lighting ratio (the background
was two stops under-exposed), Zach placed an Elinchrom 20-inch halo light to
camera right, “two stops underexposed from the main light so there’s still some
contrast, but we don’t lose all the details on the shadow side of the body,” he says.
“When you go more than one stop under on the background (ambient light), it
starts to look Photoshoppy, but that’s what helps creates that painted-on effect.”
And because he was shooting in the middle of the day with all that flash power,
Zach used a neutral density filter from LEE Filters on his lens (“basically sunglasses for
your camera”) so he could go from shooting at f/16 to f/5.

Glamour Lit Portrait
Zach used a 39-inch Westcott Zeppelin softbox
to demonstrate a feathering technique for this
portrait session at Westlight Studios in Franklin,
Tennessee.
When glamour light is typically positioned straight
on, Zach says this light angle can often lead to a flat
photo. To add more depth and texture, he did what he
calls “table topping”—pointing the light down at the floor
in front of the subject and moving her forward so the
light source only grazes her face, making it indirect or
“feathered off.”
You still get that really nice catch-light in her eyes,”
Zach says, “but you also get this beautiful, chiseled-out
texture and shadows under the chin.”
For the background, Zach took an overhead light
set to two stops below the f/11 key light at f/5.6. “It’s
shooting through a 7-inch reflector and a 20-degree
grid, so it gives a vignette look,” he says.
Although the backdrop was actually blue-gray, Zach
put an orange tungsten (half CTO) gel over the light to
match the warmth of the model’s headband.
“Anytime I shoot that background light, I put it nice
and high, and then angle it down and try to hit right
behind her head so it creates this beautiful vignette.”

To add more depth and texture,

Zach did what he calls “table-topping”—

the subject and moving her forward

years ago, when she traded in the “biggest
little city in the world” for the year-round

I’m so much inspired by Los Angeles itself,”
she explains. “But having easy access to the
desert, ocean, mountains and city is very
fortunate.” One of her first major jobs came
only two years later, in 2011, when she and
photographer Ryan Schude collaborated
on shooting a new image library for casino
chain Caesars Entertainment Corporation,
taking them to Las Vegas, New Orleans,
Atlantic City and Chicago.

WORKING WANDERLUST
But that was only the beginning of her
professional wanderings. Today, Randolph
says she’s traveling more than ever for work
and play—an integral part of her shooting
process. “My friends and I are always
planning weekend trips or overnighters
to camp in the desert, get a cabin in the
mountains, find a vacation house with a
pool,” she says. “This is how I stay inspired,
where I shoot new work.” She also organizes

SELF-INTROSPECTION
Beyond her candy-colored world, Randolph has a portfolio of compelling personal
work that starts to take on deeper tones and more mysterious dimension. She likes
to play with different characters and personalities for a series of darker self-portraits
(like the one shown here) as a way, she says, to help her reveal more of herself: “It’s

PERSONAL JEN
JOURNEY ROZENBAUM
Specialty: Boudoir
Resides: Roslyn, New York
WPPI Seminar: Redefining Boudoir and
Overcoming Challenges

In the last five years,

boudoir has risen in
popularity and varied
greatly in style. Jen
Rozenbaum, a leader
in the genre, has
evolved with her own
interpretation of boudoir and intimate
portraiture, one that—as she puts it “takes
viewers on a journey through images that
tell the stories of real women.”
Rozenbaum’s own story of how and
why she became a photographer is a
very personal one, but one she feels fully
comfortable sharing with her clients, peers
and colleagues. “Becoming a photographer
wasn’t in my life plans,” she admits. “I wasn’t
inspired by famous names or drawn in by
the thought of starting my own business.
Instead, photography found me.
“When I had my daughter in 2004, I
asked my husband to buy us a DSLR camera
so we could take pictures of her. After briefly
trying out the camera, and not ‘getting it’
right away, I put the camera away for quite
some time.”
She got pregnant again, but after
suffering a traumatic and life-threatening
miscarriage had a hard time getting back
to a routine. “I needed an escape from
my sadness, frustration and the constant
questions in my mind as to why this
happened,” she says. “It was then that
my husband reminded me of the camera
gathering dust in the closet. . .
“I didn’t know it at the time, but that
was the start of my photography journey
and my work with women. My camera
saved me. And a terrible time in my life
quickly lead to a flourishing business and
connections with many—what I like to call—
’shameless’ women [Rozenbaum also gave
birth to a healthy son in 2009]. It’s because
of these women that I have gained the

INTERNATIONAL
PULSE
BY JACQUELINE TOBIN

Award season is here, signaling the start

of an influx of Print Comp entries from
different foreign markets, each with
looks that are lavish, original and more
competitive than ever.

Photographers from around the globe make their

mark in WPPI’s Print Comp with signature looks both
for pre-wedding and wedding day that often hint at
the differences in their cultures.
For example, when it comes to photographing
wedding looks for the Asian market—think places like
China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines (as well
as a dominant Asian contingency living in Australia)—
bigger is better and showy means show-stopping.

THE COMPETITION MARKET

Adds WPPI director Jason Groupp, who
oversees the annual 16x20 Print Competition:
“The amount of money brides and grooms
in Asian markets are willing to spend on an
individual photographer has increased as
they seek out a ‘full service’ experience of
hair and makeup, outfit changes and different
sets...which means the creativity of the
photographer they are hiring has increased as
well. Full-blown shoots with not just the bride
and groom, but with the bridal party and
family members can go on for several days
prior to the wedding. “
Groupp says pre-wedding shoots are huge
in this market, and “with the pressure off from
not having a wedding day timeline to worry

about, lavish concepts abound.”

As entries pour into the office for Print
Comp each year, Groupp says it’s interesting
to see different cultural cues that prevail from
one region versus another. For example,
many more traditional images of brides and
grooms come out of China and Japan, where
showing less physical contact between the
couple is a cultural norm. “And you hardly
ever see the groom smiling or looking
uncontrollably happy,” Groupp says.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS
On the other hand, says Groupp, photog-
raphers covering the Latino market—for
example Fer Juaristi, Enrique Oliver (who
sets gorgeous brides against sweeping
landscapes) and Hiram Trillo—the images of
couples become a little warmer and more
intimate. “There’s a lot more touching, more
kissing, more hugging and generally a lot less
clothing,” says Groupp with a chuckle.
Move over to the UK, he adds, and

“And let’s not forget the Canadians,” Groupp

JUDGE’S
SPOTLIGHT

“My approach to critiquing print and video JOEL

storytelling ability, emotional impact and flow. With
video, there’s also the element of music.”
SERRATO
Specialty: Super 8 weddings
Resides: Solvang, California

Every year, WPPI

kicks off the
week with two
days of intensive
live judging for its
16x20 Print, Album
and Filmmaking
competition. Leaders
and experts in the industry are assigned
category rooms—Premiere, Bride and
Groom Together: Non-Wedding Day, Non-
Wedding Photojournalism, Filmmaking,
etc.—and entries are critiqued in front of live
audiences (including the makers) who are
there to take notes, listen and learn.
Joel Serrato, who nine years ago tapped
into the niche market of creating artistic
weddings on Super 8 film and ran with it
(”I love the graininess and imperfections
of the medium, as do my clients”), comes
to WPPI with a dual perspective—stills
and video—and will judge both this year.
Says Serrato: “More and more, my Super
8 clients are asking me to also shoot stills
of their families, their babies and overall
lifestyle looks in print.“
As for how he critiques the different
mediums, Serrato says his approach is
very similar for both: “I look for strength in
composition, storytelling ability, emotional
impact and flow,” he explains. “With video,
there’s also the element of music and
editing, motion, but the principles are
basically still the same. Print or video, you
want impact and you want the viewer’s
brain to flood with a story.”
Serrato also makes the point that music
choice for a film is more important than
many might realize, though sometimes, he
admits, “bad footage can sometimes be

HOT PRODUCTS LAUNCHING NOW

A sneak peek into early-2015 product launches that are making their mark.

A new year typically marks the launch

of new cameras and gear heralded
at shows like CES and our own WPPI.
Readers attending WPPI will be among the first
photographers to sample the newest cameras
being launched by Canon, Nikon and Pentax
during the first part of 2015. We enjoyed a
sneak peek at some of these products at CES
and trust us, you’re in for a treat.

3D Printers
In my opinion, the standout takeaway from
CES in January was the growing viability of
3D printers. There were more than a dozen
companies—including MakerBot, 3D Systems,
Solidoodle, Ultimaker and XYZprinting, to name
just a handful—showing off their newest printers,
most of which are producing far more realistic-
looking objects using easier-to-use software. The
cost of a simple 3D printer is now down to $500.
Innovative uses for these printers are just
starting to take off in the wedding industry. For
example, Martha Stewart is now selling a line
of downloadable designs of place settings for
local printing. I talked with one of her designers
who showed me how these individually printed

Canon MEGA Pixels

If you keep up with the latest camera news,
you will know by now that Canon has
introduced two new variants of the EOS
5D Mark III: the EOS 5Ds ($3,699) and 5Ds
R ($3,899, with a disabled IR filter for an
additional $300). Unless another company
just sprang a real surprise, this is one of the
most significant cameras for our readers.
Both cameras have a 50.6-megapixel
full-frame sensor, a considerable jump over
the 22-megapixel sensor in the 5D Mark III.
In case you’re wondering, the pixel density
in the 5Ds is virtually identical to that in the
20-megapixel APS-C sensor in the 7D Mark
II. Because the 5Ds uses the same dual
DIGIC 6 processors and other features from
the 7D Mark II, it has similar operational
characteristics. That also means lower ISO
(just 6400) and a slower frame rate of 5 fps.
Canon is definitely aiming this model at

size, the only significant change is the addition of a touch screen to

the fully articulated 3.2-inch, 1.37-million-dot monitor. It retains built-
in Wi-Fi, but loses the built-in GPS found in the D5300. You’ll pay
$900 for the body, or $1,000 for the body plus an 18-55mm lens.
Joining the D5500 will be a new 3.6x zoom lens. The AF-S DX
50-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR II ($350) offers three stops of Vibration
Reduction and a silent wave motor.
Nikon’s also updated its 300mm f/4 lens last month with the
new AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4 EPF ED VR lens. It uses a phase Fresnel
design that helps to shed a full pound and a half of weight and 30
percent of size versus the earlier generation lens. It has an electro-
magnetically controlled diaphragm that delivers more consistently
when shooting at faster frame rates, according to Nikon. The lens’
Vibration Reduction technology offers up to 4.5 stops of correction
with a sports mode and tripod detection. The telephoto lens will
retail for $2,000.

Previews from Pentax

Since Ricoh purchased Pentax, it has not been clear what might
happen to the Pentax brand, which still has a loyal following.
According to company officials we spoke with at CES, the medium-
format 645Z has been selling so well that Ricoh is having trouble
keeping up with demand. Pentax says it intends to continue growing
its DSLR offerings, and the first new model is the 20-megapixel K-S2,
which offers more controls than the K-S1, including built-in Wi-Fi and
an improved grip. It also hinted that a more pro-level DSLR would be

Food Lover’s Table

By Amy Wolff, Photo Editor, PDN

Photographer Erin Kunkel made this still-life image for

an upcoming book with floral designer Ariella Chezar
for Ten Speed Press. I love this photo because it reminds
me of summer—fresh tomatoes, outdoor dining. And
because of the color palette, you can really see the
painterly quality to the image. It also illustrates the trend
of overhead food and lifestyle photography, as well
as the popular farm-to-table movement. Erin’s been a
professional photographer for only four years, but has

already gotten great assignments for clients like Bon
