Getting Real
Peter Lindbergh’s name might not be as recognizable as others, but the German fashion photographer’s impressive
repertoire of portraits and new book of images back up his solid rapport in the industry. A sequel to his 1997 edition
that covered his work shot between the 1980s and ‘90s, Images of Women II: 2005-2014 (Schirmer/Mosel) tracks
his most recent images. The powerful, often mysterious portraits—of the likes of Uma Thurman, Tilda Swinton, Reese
Witherspoon and Sofia Coppola—showcase how Lindbergh’s signature style captures true personality from the
models, actresses and other creatives who pose for him, beyond the bright lights of Hollywood glamour.

Portraits by a
Pop Art Icon
Andy Warhol is most known for pioneering the pop
art movement—commenting on celebrity culture and
consumerism by using silk-screening and printmaking
techniques—though not everyone knows his photography.
Sticking primarily to the Polaroid Big Shot (which the
company kept in production especially for him), Warhol
carried a camera everywhere, also using his portraits to
produce his silkscreens. The Phoenix Art Museum will be
celebrating Warhol’s portraits, created between the 1940s
and 1980s. In addition to some of his most well-known work,
the exhibit will include Polaroids of him in drag as well as
family photographs from the artist’s more formative years.
“Andy Warhol: Portraits” will be showing from
March 4 through June 21.

Foster Children
Seeing a need to provide professional portraits to foster
children, the Heart Gallery organizes photographers across
the country to volunteer their time and skills. The Heart
Gallery’s founder, Diane Granito, remembers from her work
at the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department
that many of the generic portraits of foster children were
“as inspiring as a driver’s license photo,” she says. With an
emphasis on providing portraits to older foster children and
siblings, the Heart Gallery reports that many of the children
find permanent homes with adoptive parents. In addition

This year we celebrate our 35th year in operation. The conference
started as WPI (Wedding Photographers International), becoming
WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) along the
way.
WPPI was founded in 1978 to serve the needs of wedding
photographers, then known as the “weekend warriors,” an often
neglected segment of the industry. Since our first convention and Make remote shots as
trade show in 1980, we have grown into one of the largest events
in the industry. WPPI 2014 drew over 12,000 attendees and 350 convenient as studio work with
exhibitors, and embraces photographers from all genres, including

Zach found a sunny, side-lit fence a block away from his home for this
promotional shoot for the band Likewise. Zach says the guys in the band
worried the image would look too soft and “country,” but the photographer
assured them he was going for a flash-heavy, moody “painted-on” look.
Using two main light sources did the trick: First, a 59-inch Zeppelin Octabank
from Westcott at camera left (from the direction of the sun), which Zach says
focuses and “puts out the most stunning, beautiful light.”
To fill in the shadows caused by the aggressive lighting ratio (the background
was two stops under-exposed), Zach placed an Elinchrom 20-inch halo light to
camera right, “two stops underexposed from the main light so there’s still some
contrast, but we don’t lose all the details on the shadow side of the body,” he says.
“When you go more than one stop under on the background (ambient light), it
starts to look Photoshoppy, but that’s what helps creates that painted-on effect.”
And because he was shooting in the middle of the day with all that flash power,
Zach used a neutral density filter from LEE Filters on his lens (“basically sunglasses for
your camera”) so he could go from shooting at f/16 to f/5.

Beyond her candy-colored world, Randolph has a portfolio of compelling personal

3D Printers
In my opinion, the standout takeaway from
CES in January was the growing viability of
3D printers. There were more than a dozen
companies—including MakerBot, 3D Systems,
Solidoodle, Ultimaker and XYZprinting, to name
just a handful—showing off their newest printers,
most of which are producing far more realistic-
looking objects using easier-to-use software. The
cost of a simple 3D printer is now down to $500.
Innovative uses for these printers are just
starting to take off in the wedding industry. For
example, Martha Stewart is now selling a line
of downloadable designs of place settings for
local printing. I talked with one of her designers
who showed me how these individually printed
