Alec Soth

By Austin Winter
"I fell in love with the process of taking pictures, with
wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of
performance. The picture is a document of that performance"
Alec Soth

Style
● Portraits are done of strangers, on the street, in their homes, or even naked in
motel rooms as seen in NIAGARA
● Tell Stories, chooses meaningful titles for his projects
● Loves turning his projects into books
● Uses a large-format 8×10 camera to photograph his subjects. But likes to be like
a movie director and “to have the freedom to use different equipment for
different movies.”
● Doesn’t agree with shooting everyday, believes photography should be more
like film-making
● Keeps things out of the frame, doesn’t cram too much information
● "One thing I’m really interested in is vulnerability.”
