    An interrogation room in a police


    station. Plain colored walls and a
    large one-way window as the
    backdrop

    OFFICER JONES and DETECTIVE


    MOSS enters with DALE in
    handcuffs. Officer Jones places Dale
    in a chair. Detective Moss unlocks
    the handcuffs.

    OFFICER JONES
    Hope that chair is comfortable enough for ya. Because if you don’t give us the answers we’re
    looking for, it’s gonna be a long night for ya.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Relax, Jones. He just got here.

    Jones and Moss sit in chairs across


    from Dale. Moss turns on the
    recorder.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Monday 25 June 2018, 16:23, Lake City, Florida. Officer Jones and Detective Moss,
    interrogation room with witness, Dale Fleetwood, of disturbance in neighborhood on Friday 22
    June 2018, 12:41. Dale, we would like to ask you some questions if that’s alright?

    DALE
    Sure. I just want Jack in the room with me.

    OFFICER JONES
    Is he serious?

    DALE
    Yes, I am. I don’t have a lawyer, you have a partner in the room with you, I want my friend with
    me.

    Jones and Moss gives each other a
    look. Moss leaves the room and
    comes back with JACK. Jack is a
    stuffed toy cactus. Moss hands the
    toy to Dale.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Now, Mr. Fleetwood, are you ready to continue?

    DALE
    Please, call me Dale.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Dale.

    DALE
    I’m good to go.

    OFFICER JONES
    What do you recall about the day in question?

    DALE
    I was in my house watching cartoons and eating a bowl of cereal with Jack. Then, boom! A gun
    went off. I opened my door to see what was going on. Jack and I saw Rita run out of her house—

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    The suspect in question.

    DALE
    Screaming for someone to call 9-1-1.

    OFFICER JONES
    Five minutes later emergency personnel came to the scene. Then what?

    DALE
    We went back into the house. Let the people do their jobs.

    Dale pauses and stares at Jack

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Is…everything alright?

    Dale snaps out of the stare

    DALE
    Huh?

    OFFICER JONES
    Detective asked if you were good. Ya blanked out on us.

    DALE

    Oh. That’s weird.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Well, did you see anyone that may have looked suspicious? Another neighbor?

    DALE
    No. Everyone was worried and concerned about Rita. I didn’t see anyone that had any ulterior
    motives. Are we done here?

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    I have one more question.

    DALE
    Can we come back to it? I need to take a leak.

    OFFICER JONES
    (irritated)
    Let’s go.

    Jones grabs Dale’s upper arm for him to


    stand. Jones guides Dale out of the door.

    Moss is left with Jack. The lights flicker


    briefly

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    What was that?

    JACK
    Power surge?

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    What’s going on?

    JACK
    Detective, over here.

    Moss is shocked

    JACK
    This is a bit odd, but you aren’t losing your mind.

    DECTECTIVE MOSS
    Oh, I am.

    JACK
    Please gather yourself. I wasn’t asked my side of the story. Dale isn’t being completely honest.
    What we were doing was true, but he did see someone that looked suspicious. Naturally when he
    turns to face a direction I’m forced to look that way too. There was a man with a hoodie on. His
    eyes were covered, but not the rest of his face. He had a tattoo of a spider on his cheek. Also had
    a hoop piercing on his lip.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Thanks. Does…does Dale know you talk?

    JACK
    No. I think he feels that something is happening when he looks at me. Like I’m staring through is
    his soul.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    Thank you for your help. And scaring me.

    JACK
    No problem.
    5.
    The lights flicker again

    Jones enters with Dale the same way


    he left. Dale sits down in the chair.

    DALE
    I’m ready for that last question.

    DETECTIVE MOSS
    I’m good on the final question. I’ve gathered all the information I needed. You’re free to go.

    Moss turns off the recorder and


    leaves

    DALE

    Um. Okay.

    OFFICER JONES
    Thank you for your cooperation.

    DALE
    It wasn’t a problem. Jack and I can go home now.

    Dale picks up Jack. He holds Jack


    like a child on his shoulder.

    DALE
    Say bye to Officer Jones.

    The lights flicker and Jack waves to


    Jones. Dale and Jack exit

    Jones flops down in a chair in


    disbelief
