for basic wire and cable manufacturing information is high and
it likely reflects the turnover in manufacturing jobs at industry

Ten instructors covered these topics: Mechanics of wiredrawing;

extrusion; basics of electrical testing; ferrous heat treatment;
used machinery; manufacturing problem solving; testing and

GMH’s order for 4D Eagle measurement gauge

GEORGSMARIENHÜTTE (GMH) Germany has placed an order The 4D Eagle will replace an existing light measurement gauge
with Friedrich Kocks, Germany, for the supply of a 4D Eagle® full and will be installed at the exit of the existing Kocks RSB®
profile measurement gauge. 370/6. It will cover a production diameter range from 19.5mm
to 81mm at rolling speeds up to 13m/s.
Its working principle is based on the most advanced laser light
sectioning method. The project target is to increase the reliability and consistency
of the hot bar profile measurement under ever-changing
production conditions.

Furthermore, the 4D Eagle® will provide profile data to the RSB®

Size Control System (SCS®) for closed-loop process control.

The 4D Eagle also features rolling defect detection. This

feature enables an auto recognition of form deviations as
well as occurring rolling defects such as roll breakage or roller
failures.

The new 4D Eagle will further improve the process

transparency as well supporting the further optimisation of the
product quality.

Commissioning of the new 4D Eagle light section measurement

gauge was scheduled for the end of 2018.

As one of the world’s longest sea

bridges, there was a need to ensure
that products used in building the
bridge structures over open ocean were
biodegradable and wouldn’t cause harm
to the environment.

Metalube’s Ropetek WRD 40-1 is one

of few products on the market able to
deliver high quality lubrication whilst
remaining environmentally friendly.

As such, Ropetek WRD 40-1 was used

throughout the bridge’s construction.

Ropetek WRD 40-1 provides effective

lubrication and corrosion protection
to the steel ropes of the floating
cranes, enabling greater rope longevity
whilst also protecting the sea water
environments.

The product is known for its resistance to

moisture and oxidation which protects
against corrosion-induced failure.

It also has high-load carrying solids that

minimise friction and wear between wires
and strands.

WRD 40-1’s resistance to water prevents

the lubricant being washed from the
rope, making it a suitable solution for the
floating lifting cranes.

Metalube exports 95 per cent of

its production to over 90 countries
worldwide and has offices in Manchester,
UK; Dubai, UAE; Mumbai, India; São Paulo,
Brazil; and Shanghai, China.

In Manchester the company has a fully

integrated lubricant manufacturing
facility including new laboratories.
Research and development are key
to the business and it is constantly
investing in the Metalube Technology
Centre, ensuring technical excellence
and innovation across its entire range of
products and services.

“Through continuous research, we have succeeded in increasing
our printers’ energy efficiency so that they consume only 20
watts – less than most light bulbs,” said Christina Leibinger,
managing proprietor of Paul Leibinger. The designers have used
ingenious power-saving tricks such as energy-saving electronics

By comparison, systems that mark products with lasers and are

widely used in the industry not only consume several hundred

ozone-containing flumes, which then calls for the operation of
energy-hungry filter systems. “CIJ printers are therefore far more

New basic partial discharge calibrator

Haefely Hipotronics, a developer and provider of high voltage test systems and
measuring devices, has launched the new Basic Partial Discharge Calibrator – KAL 9511.

KAL 9511 is a successor to the Tettex 9216 and covers a wide range of applications. It is
compact, easy to use and has the same long battery operation capability of Tettex 9216,
but offers higher performance by using an injection capacitance more than ten times
smaller.

It has a higher SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) than the recommended current and proposed
future standards.

VNT technology from India

Ajex & Turner manufactures advanced
VNT dies, trapezoidal/sector dies, and
shape dies in TC and PCD, along with
various others. Its advanced wire drawing
and compacting vitrified nanocrystalline
technology (VNT) dies continue to be
used as replacements for solid PCD
dies. VNT can control diameter through-
out its life and does not require any
rework; on the other hand, a PCD die’s
hole gets enlarged after use and requires
re-polishing and re-grinding, which is not
the case with VNT dies.

VNT dies also are superior to tungsten

a wire mill. The company is proud of
its legacy of helping mills achieve this goal by building die finishing machines strong
enough for reworking used dies with speed and accuracy.

The success of a die shop’s quality directly affects the wire mill’s productivity. This is
why Die Quip builds its machines on rigid steel platforms to easily cut dies to meeting
points, which controls bearing lengths. By using this system the bearing lengths are
controlled mathematically so the results are consistent, repeatable and easily managed
by operators. The company states that the angle–setting gauges enable customers to
consistently produce accurate die angles better than 90 per cent of industry standards.

Die Quip has stand-alone machines for finishing dies or, to keep up with maximum
efficiency for larger production, it builds work cells of two or more machines to
eliminate downtime from size changeovers. Its approach to a modern die shop brings
benefits to the whole production process by implementing a workflow system that
sets procedures and incorporates training to maximise each machine’s capabilities. This
allows these dies to last longer in production, allowing more wire to be made.

Innovation the route forward
Kay Pee Dies for Paramount
Kay Pee Dies, based in India, started in Paramount Die has introduced several products that have become wire industry
1968, manufacturing tungsten carbide standards or best practices, and it continues to innovate. Higher drawing speeds, better
dies, and is now a prominent business in wire quality and improved wire mill productivity have all been aided by the company’s
wire drawing, bar drawing, fasteners and technologies.
other industries.
One such innovation is the ParaLoc™ pressure system, a widely used pressure die
system. The company claims that the ParaLoc pressure systems deliver higher drawing
performance while also promoting sustainability by allowing customers to return and
responsibly recycle their used inserts, which are then reprocessed through Paramount’s
automated reclamation system.

A more recent innovation is Paramount’s new ParaLoc-S, a pressure system designed to

fit into smaller spaces. This allows customers to use a fully functioning pressure system
in smaller die boxes and will open the benefits of the ParaLoc pressure systems to older
drawing lines.

Paramount has long been recognised as a premier supplier of dies, and is growing
leadership in the development of shaped dies.

Currently, work is being performed to develop new shaped die technologies, which
combine the company’s geometry and quality with innovative shaped die designs.
