The key takeaways are that codominance results in the expression of both alleles in the phenotype of the heterozygote, and an example of codominance in humans is MN blood typing.

Codominance is when neither allele is dominant over the other, so both are expressed equally. An example in humans is MN blood typing, where individuals can have both M and N antigens on their red blood cells.

The 'Mystery Bull' activity helps determine which bull is the father of Mang Marcelino's cows by having students do Punnett squares to analyze the possible offspring phenotypes from matings between his cows and three bulls - a red bull, a white bull, and a roan bull.

III – PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACTIVITY

A. PREPARATION

“Good afternoon class!” “Good afternoon Ma’am!”

Students will remain standing and one of the
“Please pick up the pieces of paper” students will lead the prayer.

Before we start, let us have a recall about your “It is about the incomplete dominance Mam.”
lesson last time. What was your lesson last time?

Can you tell me something about that? “Incomplete dominance is a form of intermediate
That’s right. Thank you. Now, who inheritance in which one allele for a specific trait is
can tell anything you learned about it? not completely dominant over the other allele.”

Very well said class.

Incomplete dominance results in a third

phenotype in which the expressed trait is a
combination of the dominant and recessive
phenotypes.

Class, tell me something about this!

“If the shirts represent traits for red and white, can “No Ma’am”
you mix them to make pink?

Why can’t you make it pink? “Because they already have their own colors
Ma’am”
B. PRESENTATION
What about if we are going to cross breed a red
coz and a white cow. Can you have pink cow?

We will figure out the answer in our topic today.

Codominance

It is another pattern of inheritance is

codominance. This results when one allele is not
dominant over the other. The resulting
heterozygous exhibit the traits of both parents.
One example of codominance is the MN blood
typing in humans. On the surface of our red blood
cells are proteins bound to sugar molecules,
forming complexes called antigens. One group of
antigens are controlled by a pair of alleles, LM and
LN.
The pairing of these alleles will determine the
blood type of an individual, and there are three:
M,MN, and N.
The table below summarizes the genotypes and
phenotypes of the MN blood typing in humans.
Blood types Genotypes
M M
M L L
MN LM LN
N LL LL

Note that in the heterozygote condition, both LM

and LN alleles are expresses such that the red
blood cells will have M and N antigens, Just like in
the incomplete dominance, the genotypic ratio in
codominance also becomes thee phenotypic ratio.

Codominance in Cattle

Now let’s have an activity entitled “Mystery Bull”

Procedure:

1. Read the given problem:

“Mang Marcelino owns purebred red cows. In his
farm he noticed that after a typhoon several
months ago, all of the fences that separate his
cattle from his neighbor’s cattle were destroyed.
During the time that the fences were down, three
bulls, one from each neighbor, mingled with his
cows. For a while, he thought that none of the bulls
found his cows, but over the months, he noticed
that all of his cows are pregnant. He suspected
that one of the bulls is the father which bull is it?
Help Mang Marcelino look for the father by solving
the given pattern.

2. Determine the possible traits of the calves if:

 A red (RR) bull is mated with a red (RR)
cow 1
 A red (RR) bull is mated with a white (WW)
cow 2
 A roan (RW) is mated with a red (RR) cow
3

3. Illustrate your answers using a Punnett square.

4. Write your answers on the manila paper.
5. Present and discuss your answers.

Guide questions:
Will you be able to trace the father of the
calves?______________
What are the possible phenotypes of the calves for
each
cow?_____________________________________
Do you think you will make Mang Marcelino happy
about the result of
your investigation?
_________________________________
How are you going to explain it to him?
________________________
How would you apply what you have learned to
improve the breeds of livestock
in your area?
_________________________________________
What possible suggestions can you give to animal
breeders in your area?

Generalization

In codominance, both alleles are expressed equally

in the phenotypes of the heterozygote. For
example, red cows crossed with white cows will
have offspring that are roan cows. Roan refers to
cows with red hair and white blotches.

VI- Agreement:

Give 3 more examples of codominance patter.

Do advance study in “Multiple Alleles
