Engine Fuel Sulfur Tolerance Kit Installation Overview
Engine modification with the sulfur tolerance kit enables an engine to enter regions
without emissions regulations that may not have ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) available.
The sulfur tolerance kit may be installed after-in-service on select industrial engine
platforms requiring ULSD. The sulfur tolerance kit must be installed by a Cummins®
authorized distributor. Cummins® authorized distributors can be located using the
following website: http://locator.cummins.com

Eligibility
Engine modification with the sulfur tolerance kit must be evaluated for each individual
engine since there are differences in platforms, ratings, and local regulations. In every
instance of modification with the sulfur tolerance kit, the following guidelines must be
met:

• The import region must be an emissions unregulated country. Consult the local
import region regulatory agency.
• The local import regulatory agency must allow modification with the sulfur tolerance
kit. Consult the local import regulatory agency.
• The engine must be listed as one of the eligible configurations indicated in Table 2
below.
The sulfur tolerance kit will change emissions, performance, and specifications of the
engine. Reference the checklist below for items that must be discussed and evaluated
with the customer prior to ordering.

• Additional exhaust tubing will be required and is the responsibility of the customer
and OEM to provide. See Step 5 in the Engine Modification section below.
• The typical hardware and ECM calibration modification, excluding exhaust
fabrication, will take approximately three hours, but each hardware kit and chassis
will differ.

Prior to performing any individual engine modification steps listed above, review all steps
in the preceding sections. This will prevent customer down-time and increased cost.
Many steps can be done simultaneously.
Installation of the hardware kits will vary by engine. Reference the table below for the
corresponding installation instructions.
At this time there is not a reclamation program for removed components; dispose of all
removed components in accordance with local regulations.
The Cummins® Care Europe (CCE) center will notify the distributor when the ECM
calibration is available and will provide the ECM calibration to the distributor. See the
corresponding Service Manual. Reference Procedure 019-032 in Section 19. See Table
5 below.

The ECM serial number can be confirmed as valid without connecting to the ECM.
Checking for the ECM serial number before connecting to the engine may prevent
additional travel expenses. To check the ECM serial number validity:
The updated engine dataplate provided by Cummins® Care Europe must be installed.
Remove and destroy the original dataplate. See the corresponding Service Manual.
Reference Procedure 001-057 in Section E. See Table 5 below. Replacement engine
dataplates will be a sticker.
Reference ECM Replacement section at the end of this document for installation of the
ECM notification tag.

• The engine modification with the sulfur tolerance kit components, agency approval,
and ECM calibration changes will be reflected on QuickServe® Online in about ten
business days from notification of ECM calibration availability.
• Updates to the service engine model name to display the correct Service manuals
and procedures on QuickServe® Online may take up to twenty additional business
days to appear. The correct sulfur tolerance kit Service Manuals can be located

using the Search feature of QuickServe® Online and the bulletins found in Table 5
below.
• The installation of the sulfur tolerance kit changes the service model name of the
engine. See Table 4 below.
ECM Replacement
• Sulfur tolerance kit ECM calibrations are prevented from being installed on ineligible
engines through a security check unique to the ECM serial number. Every ECM has
a unique serial number.
• When an engine fitted with the sulfur tolerance kit requires an ECM replacement, the
new ECM serial number must be provided to the Cummins® Care Europe (CCE)
center. The processing time will take approximately three business days.
• When the replacement ECM order is placed, an order must also be placed for the
replacement ECM notification tag, Part Number 4369084, shown in Figure 2 below.
The replacement ECM notification tag must be installed.
◦ See the corresponding Service Manual. Reference Procedure 100-001 in
Section E. See Table 5 below.
