Series 50® and 60®

The proven 8.5L Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine is the

4-cylinder version of the popular Series 60 with the
same heavy-duty qualities as the larger 6-cylinder Series
60. With a horsepower range from 250 bhp to 350 bhp,
this is the ideal engine for applications where high torque
and horsepower are demanded.

The first commercial diesel engine with a fully integrated

electronic control system, the Detroit Diesel Series 60 is
the workhorse engine other manufacturers have tried to
imitate. Engineered for long, trouble-free operation, the
300 bhp to 665 bhp Series 60 is designed for high
reliability, long engine life, and low cost of operation.

Series 60
300 to 665 bhp
Features and Benefits
■ A complete power range from a common package
■ Reliability and durability leader in its class
■ Low life-cycle cost
B
■ The complete DDEC System: Integrated engine
management and control system. No adjustments or
tune-ups means reduced downtime. Improved fuel
economy. Fewer parts improves reliability.
■ Unaided cold starts to 20º F
■ DDEC-controlled automatic ether starts to –30º F C
■ Over 125,000 20,000-hour engines
■ The overhead cam allows for the use of
36 head bolts on the Series 60, providing
up to 1 million pounds of clamp load on
the head gasket for extremely long life. A
■ Main and rod bearings are big. That’s why the
Series 50/60 engines have no requirement to roll
out bearings–– it’s just not necessary.

Complete Control With The DDEC System

DDEC is a complete, integrated engine management and control

Input to DDEC comes from a variety of sources:
■ The machine operator
■ The machine itself
■ Engine sensors
These inputs flow to the Electronic Control Module

Time to replace that worn-out engine? Diesel

technicians know that a Detroit Diesel reliabilt ®
remanufactured engine is a cost-saving alternative
to a factory-fresh engine.

Every reliabilt® engine carries a no-nonsense one-

year warranty backed by Detroit Diesel. The reliabilt®
“no-hassle” core exchange program guarantees the
quick exchange of a used engine for a ready-to-install
reliabilt® unit. That means vital equipment can be put
back to work with a minimum of downtime.

Series 60
What’s so special about reliabilt® engines? All parts 165 to 630 bhp
used in reliabilt® engines are remanufactured to
meet strict tolerances and are performance-tested
before being installed. Machined castings or
assemblies that fail are scrapped and replaced
with new components. Any ongoing product
improvement modifications are also added during
the remanufacturing process.

Completed reliabilt® engines are then dynamometer-

tested using test protocol for new Detroit Diesel
engines to make sure they meet the latest
Detroit Diesel-approved performance guidelines
and conform to current EPA and/or CARB
emissions requirements.
