Civil Rights in the USA 1945-1968 – Historical Analysis

During the mid 90s, the United States of America had many political and social
developments. These developments shaped the nations nature and structure.

The Civil Rights Movements that had taken place in the United States was a demonstration
that captured worldwide attention and demanded social and political repression be abolish
and that the nation deemed as ‘the world’s greatest nation’ would become a nation of
peaceful justice and projected respectful prosperity through the acceptance of difference.

Assessment Focus Question: Explain the motivation behind a key civil rights movement e.g.
Freedom Rides, Montgomery Bus Boycott or the March on Washington. When analysing
your chosen event, you must:

 Explain African-American’s positions post WWII, what is racial segregation and what
was its effect on US society, both political and social.
 Explain reasons as to why the event occurred/began – e.g. Was the Montgomery
Bus Boycott a result of the Rosa Parks refusal to give up her seat to a White man.
 What were the attitudes of people who opposed your chosen movement? e.g. The
White Citizens Council’s opposition.
 Following your chosen movement, what were some achievements made due to
the movement and are these achievements still present in the United States
today? e.g. The Civil Rights Act (1964), the watershed moment of the elected US
president Barack Obamas, the first ever African-American president in US history.

shaping the past.
 Analyses the different perspectives of individuals and groups in their
historical context.
 Assesses the significance of historical features, people, ideas, movements,
events and developments of the modern world.
 Plans and conducts historical investigations and presents reasoned
conclusions, using relevant evidence from a range of sources.
