Calculus 1 Reflection

My time in calculus has been worthwhile. I have learned so many important skills that

will help me a lot as I continue to work on my Mechanical Engineering degree. Some of the

most important things calculus had taught me are the use of derivatives in real world scenarios,

understanding how to read a graph better, and helping me understand the formulas used in

physics.

Derivatives were something I struggled with for the longest time and I honestly had no

idea why we even need to twist and reduce mathematical functions like this. In both aspects’

derivatives made no sense to me, mathematically and practically. This class, however, taught

me that derivatives can help in many aspects of daily life, such as using a function to figure out

the velocity of a car that you were designing. By creating a more expanded function from the

original, one can determine the car’s velocity. Also, by finding the second derivative of the

function one can determine the car’s speed as well.

Graphs so far in math have been relatively simple and lacking major details, especially

when all you’ve had to make a graph is a simple linear function. Calculus, however, can

determine many aspects from a linear function and show more of what the function’s graph

really looks like. One example is by using the derivate of a graph function one can determine a

graph’s local extrema, the highest points and lowest points in a graph. What’s more they can

also help find when the graph is decreasing and when it is increasing in a graph. Thus, providing

a far more detailed and accurate graph.

Calculus has many practical uses in life, for me it’s the basis for most of the math I’m

going to be using as a Mechanical Engineer. Physics is one class I’ve been taking for me to get

my degree. Calculus is a huge part of physics, because it’s part of the calculations needed to

figure out, say, the velocity of block being propelled by a spring. Calculus is also used to figure

out the distance the block traveled when it was being pushed by the spring. Without calculus,

physics in general just wouldn’t make as much sense.

Calculus has been a major help in understanding a lot of important things that will help

me in my career as a Mechanical Engineer, and I have no doubt it’ll help in other fields I might

delve into later. Life can be hard when you don’t know the proper math needed, so I am glad

that this class had given me a vital set of mathematical skills that will undoubtedly come in

handy for future jobs. Calculus is a good math field to study, and I hope to retain all the

important skills I have developed in this class.
