Purdue University BCM Major
7 February 2018
Expected date of graduation: June 2020

2. Luke picked this major because no day in this major is the same and it gives you a lot of responsibility.
Luke took EPDS when he was a freshman and discovered the major through a classmate. After hearing
about it he did further research by asking people who were in the major about it.
3. Construction management comes with many group projects. It also heavily relies on labs to teach
students. Classes tend to have thirty to forty students in it.
4. Luke claimed BCM 175 was his favorite. BCM 175 gives you a good introduction to what construction
management is about. It was his favorite because he like the instructors. He also looked forward to the
labs because it gave you real scenarios you might have as a construction manager. He got to do QTOs and
build different things in the labs.
5. Luke struggled with BCM 285. BCM 285 had to with statics and the strengths of different construction
materials implying it had to do with a lot of complex math. Luke also didn’t enjoy the instructor for this
class.
6. Students need to be able to communicate well and be organized. Students need to have the ability to
work in groups and independently. Luke also believes you should be detail oriented. Luke also stressed
being able to build and maintain relationships. Construction management leads you to careers that you
deal and work with many people.
7. Luke is planning to go work as an assistant project manager for a specialty contractor. Luke said that
students don’t need to go to graduate school but the experience can be a catalyst to their career(about 10%
go to graduate school immediately after graduating).
Types of Careers:

• Project engineer
• Field engineer
• Project manager
• Superintendent
• Safety Director
• Estimator

8. Luke said that for extra-curricular activities internships are important, due to the fact, you gain practical
experience that can help you in your career as well as in the classroom. Luke interned for Tippman over
the summer of 2018.

9. I asked Luke if he was happy with the major he chose. Luke told me,” Yes, I am very happy with this
major I chose. Purdue has given me a lot of opportunities to go where I want in the industry, and I treat
my job more than just a job, as a career.”
10. Prior to this interview I had less of an idea of what to expect in the BCM major. Currently in taking a
construction management class to get my feet wet but we still haven’t really received any real experience
I was hoping to get. Talking to Luke about his experiences with the major courses has given me a better
understanding of what I would be getting myself into if I were to choose BCM as my major. The BCM
course offers many different high paying careers, and Luke seemed to be very pleased with how Purdue
ran the course for him as well as the opportunities Purdue gave him for networking. Before the interview,
I didn’t ever consider doing an internship this summer, but Luke compelled me to think more seriously
about it. Luke really stressed how important internships were in this major and gaining experience. The
internships not only help you learn outside the classroom they help you within the classroom itself.
Although I may still be undecided after this interview, Luke has made me feel more interested in the
major as well as possibly pursuing an internship this summer.
