    Search Engine Manipulation

    Web searches can be manipulated to access publicly available information that is typically not intended for
    public distribution.

    Here are some examples:

    This search manipulation will list all excel spreadsheets that contain the word personnel:

    personnel filetype:doc

    The filetype operator does not recognize diferent versions of similar files formats. Each file format must
    be queried separately. (i.e. xls vs. xlsx, doc vs. docx, rtf vs. txt).

    personnel filetype:doc OR personnel filetype:xls

    This example search manipulation will list all publicly-accessible DOC files on the NASA website:

    site:nasa.gov filetype:doc

    This example search manipulation will list all publicly-accessible XLS spreadsheet files with the word
    “budget” on the United States Department of State website:

    This example search manipulation will list all publicly-accessible PDF document files with the word
    “technology” on South African website domain names.

    Websites may ask you to register to view the contents. Search manipulation can be used to view website
    content without registration.

    This example search manipulation will provide internal website addresses based on specified criteria within
    the url address.
