What you should know!
Operating mode
The CMM makes it possible to measure in two operating modes:
manual and automatic.
In the manual mode, the workpiece is probed by means of the joy-
sticks. The joysticks are located on the control console.
In the automatic mode, the workpiece is measured using a CNC
program. The measuring software enables programming of CNC

Important!
Make sure that the reference point travel can be carried out with-
out any collisions with components on the measuring table.
• Move the probe to a position from where the reference point
travel can be carried out automatically.
Park position after After the reference point travel, the probe moves to the park posi-
the reference point tion. The coordinates of this position are defined in the measuring
travel software. The coordinates must be within the measuring volume.
Example of park position: X= 30, Y= -30, Z= -30.

Temperature influence
The stylus is inserted manually and qualified immediately. Due to
the heat of the hand, the temperature of the probe material and
the material properties change as a result thereof. Minor differ-
ences in temperature already influence the material properties. The
degree of influence depends on the components of the stylus sys-
tem.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
8 Preparations for a measuring run
Temperature compensation
Temperature compensation
What is temperature compensation?
The measuring software calculates the workpiece geometry for the
material properties at 20°C. 20°C is the reference temperature for
length measurements according to DIN EN ISO 1. Since the actual
temperature deviates from the 20°C, the geometric data has to be
corrected by a correctional value.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
Expansion coefficient The correction value is calculated by the measuring software. How-
ever, the measuring software needs to know the temperature of
the CMM and the workpiece. Furthermore, the expansion coeffi-
cient must be entered in the measuring software ➤ operating
instructions for the measuring software.
8 Preparations for a measuring run
Temperature compensation
Procedure
We can differentiate between two cases:
– If no temperature sensor can be connected to the CMM:
• Determine the temperature of the workpiece.
• Enter the temperature of the workpiece and the expansion
coefficient for the workpiece material in the measuring soft-
ware.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
Correction value
All of the geometric data measured on the workpiece is corrected
by the correction value with respect to the reference temperature
of 20°C. Exact workpiece measurement is thus guaranteed.
8 Preparations for a measuring run
Temperature compensation
> Important!
Regular inspection of the stylus systems is required to ensure cor-
rect workpiece measurement.
• Check the styli, the stylus system components and the adapter
plate regularly.
• Remove any particles or grease film from the stylus tips and the

adapter plate.
• Replace any styli that are damaged.
8 Probing the workpiece
Probing procedure
Probing procedure
Selecting the type of probing
The type of probing depends on the measuring job and the
required number of measuring points. Position measurement
requires only one or more discrete-point probing actions. Multi-
point probing or scanning can be used when determining dimen-
sions. Scanning must be used for form measurements.

Probing sequence
Working step Example
1 Select stylus.
2 For scanning: Surface scanning
Select the scanning mode
and start the measuring
routine.
8 Probing the workpiece
Probing procedure
Probing conditions
The following conditions must be fulfilled to guarantee collision-
free scanning: These conditions depend on the probe system. The
following conditions must be fulfilled:
– Constant probing speed.
– Minimum distance to the contact point.
A minimum distance is required to reach the probing speed. The
minimum distance should be 2 to 4mm. In case of smaller dis-
tances, the probing time increases.
8 Probing the workpiece
Probing procedure
Probing speed
Probing should be carried out at constant speed.
The speed depends on the deflection of the joystick. At the begin-
ning and end of the deflection range, the speed is proportional to
the amount of deflection. The speed between the beginning and
the end is constant. This speed corresponds to the probing speed.

Joystick deflection
v Speed
v1 Probing speed;
optimum speed during probing.
Maximum possible The maximum possible speed is reached at full deflection of the
speed joystick. The actual speed depends on the position of the control
knob on the control console.
8 Probing the workpiece
Probing procedure
Proceed as follows:
1 Enter a standard value of 100% in the measuring software, in
case this option is given in the measuring software.
2 Adjust the speed using the control knob on the control console.
If the control knob is turned clockwise as far as possible, the
maximum possible speed corresponds to the standard value,
e.g. 100%, defined in the measuring software.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
Probing
– In the case of styli with a very thin stylus shaft, the probing
dynamics may have to be reduced.
– Self-centering probing is not permitted.
The moments generated by frictional forces lead to inaccurate
measurements.
– Disc styli may not be used since these cannot be qualified.
8 Probing the workpiece
Special features used for measuring probing systems
Notes on scanning
Scanning speed
The possible scanning speed depends on the measuring force, the
surface condition of the workpiece, the radius of the stylus tip and
the required tolerance.
klqb Too high scanning speeds can lead to incorrect measured results.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
For this reason, stylus tips should be checked regularly following all
scanning operations and be replaced, if necessary.
• Check the condition of the stylus tips and clean them.
• If the stylus tip is damaged, then replace the stylus.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
8 Automatic stylus system change
klqb The measuring software is required in order to carry out this proce-
dure.
• Please read the corresponding chapters in the operating instruc-
tions for the measuring software.
8 Tips for effective operation
Standard deviation The result is evaluated based on the standard deviation. There is no
maximum standard deviation which applies to all applications. The
tolerable deviation depends on many factors: e.g. on the resolu-
tion and precision of the CMM, length and rigidity of the stylus
shaft, quality of the stylus tip, cleanness of the environment, sur-
face and form of the workpiece.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
sphere and of the stylus – The reference sphere or stylus tip is soiled, oiled or dam-
system aged.
– Stylus system components or adapter plate are/is damaged.
Status of the reference – Bottom of the reference sphere holder is damaged.
sphere holder
Workpiece condition – The workpiece shows signs of deformation and roughness.
– The workpiece is soiled.
– Workpiece is covered with oil, forexample drops of oil in the
small bores.
– The workpiece material is too soft.
8 Terminating the measuring operation
What does the system shutdown do?
If you put the CMM out of operation and switch it off completely,
the following data will be lost:
– Reference point
– Information about the current valid coordinate system.
When putting the machine into operation again, a reference point
travel has to be carried out.
61211-3040402 | DuraMax | Operating Instructions
Shutdown procedure
After the CMM has been shut down, the probe remains in its last
position. The space coordinates of its position are lost.
In order to avoid faults when the CMM is put back into operation,
the measuring operation should be terminated correctly. For infor-
mation on the operator's controls, please refer to ➤ page 3-9.
