SAFE DRIVING DURING RAINY WEATHER

ON ROADS
When the roads are dry for a long period, engine oil and grease build up on roads and highways. As
soon as the first drops of rain start to fall, the water mixes with this build-up, making the roads
incredibly slippery.

Remember:
Slow down. Always drive at a slower speed when the roads are wet.
Turn on your headlights. This will not only help to see the road, but also it will help other drivers to see you.
Turn on your defroster. Turn on front and rear defrosters to defog windows.
Pull over when things get bad. If you can barely see, pull over and wait for the rain to slow down or stop.
Turn off cruise control. Cruise control may cause you to lose control.
Avoid excessive or sudden braking. If the brake pedal is pushed to the limit, the car will probably skid.
Accelerate slowly when stuck in the mud. Don’t spin the wheels, or vehicle could sink deeper.
Take turns slowly. Turning too quickly will not be able to control the car, and could skid out.
Keep more space with other vehicles. This will give more time to stop and react to traffic.

Plan ahead:

 Make sure windshield wipers are working correctly. Replace cracked and poor wipers.
 Check tire tread. Replace tires if they are worn, cracked or damaged.
 Check headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals to be sure all are working properly.
 Brakes, steering, fluid levels, tire pressure, and the defroster should be checked.
 Ensure a good emergency kit available in the vehicle
