A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Equation of a Circle

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the 60-minute discussion, 75% of the students are expected
to:
1. Identify the radius of the circle.
2. Determine the equation of a circle in the standard form and graph.
3. Relate equation of a circle into the real-world setting.

D. Skills to Develop: Analysis, Critical Thinking
E. Concept: The standard equation of a circle with center at (ℎ, 𝑘) and a
radius of 𝑟 units is (𝑥 − ℎ)2 + (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2 .The values of ℎ and𝑘
indicate that the circle is translated ℎ units horizontally and 𝑘 units
vertically from the origin. If the center of the circle is at the origin, the
equation of the circle is 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 𝑟 2 .

the Lesson
Equation of a Circle
are arguably one of
the most interesting
topics in the field of
mathematics They
only require you to
know the center and
the radius of the
circle to make the
equation in standard
form. Today, we will
discuss something
which is probably
part of amazing
topic about circles;
and that is the so-
called equation of a
circle.

D. Presentation of Ok class, today we

Lesson Objectives should take aim to
target some goals
that we need to
attain during and
after the discussion.
First we must know
t…….. After doing
so, we should try to
find the equation of
a circle in standard
form given the
center and radius,
then graph. And
lastly, we should
integrate equation of
a circle into our daily
living.

E. Lesson Proper
Please count 1 to 5.
1. Activity After doing so,
please take note of
your numbers and (Students will

group number.

“TURN ME INTO
STANDARD FORM”

Mechanics: There
will be a set of
coordinates with
corresponding
radiusgiven.
You’regoing to
determine the
equation of a circle
using the standard
equation of a circle
with center at (ℎ, 𝑘) (Students will

so shortly.)
your objective is to
substitute the given
coordinates (ℎ, 𝑘) in
this form(𝑥 − ℎ)2 +
(𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2 . Then
graph the
equation.Afterwards,
a presentation of
work will be done by
a representative of
each group.

1. What is the
equation of a circle
with center at(2,7)
and a radius of 6
units?

2. What is the
equation of a circle
with center at (-5,3)
and a radius of 12
units?

3. What is the
equation of a circle
with center at(-4, -9)
and a radius of 8
units?
4. What is the
equation of a circle
with center at(0,0)
and a radius of 4
units?
5. What is the
equation of a circle
with center at the
origin and a radius
of 6 units?

Very good. Please

settle yourselves
now.

2. Analysis What did you do in

the activity?
Ma’am! You let
us find the
equation in
Ok very good! So, I standard form.
let you to substitute
the given center and
Radius to get the
equation of a circle.
Very easy right.

Yes! Ma’am
What can you
Say about the
number about 4 and
5?
Ma’am, we
noticed that in
finding the
equation using
the standard
form we must be
careful, when the
center is with
negative sign,
substitute then
operation will
become addition,
following the law
of multiplying
negative
integers, unlike if
it is positive very
easy, you just
plug in the value
for k and h, then
that’s it leaving
you with
subtraction as
the operation.
3. Abstraction Ok, very good! That
is a great
observation. But
how if we do the
reversed process
given the equation
of a circle you will
identify the center
and radius of a
circle Any volunteer
from the class?

1. (𝑥 − 5)2 +
(𝑦 − 6)2 =
81.
2. (𝑥 + 7)2 +
(𝑦 + 5)2 =
16.
3. 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 =
144.
4. (𝑥 − 7)2 +
(𝑦 − 1)2 = 49
5. (𝑥 − 4)2 +
(𝑦 + 5)2 =
25..
Ma’am, it’s a bit
different and
unique among
the other
equation made,
since the center
is (0,0) it will
leave you an
amazing
equation which is
for example the
answer in
2
number 4. 𝑥 +
Excellent! You’re a 𝑦 2 = 16.
keen observer, huh?
So, you can easily
obtain the equation
in standard form by
using this form
4. Application (𝑥 − ℎ)2 +
(𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2 . When
the center of the
circle is (0,0) or
what we so called
the origin the
equation will be in
this form 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 =
𝑟2

So, based from all

these observations
that we had
brainstormed from
the activity that we
had a while ago,
how will you now
find the equation?
Ma’am! We
simply substitute
the center and
radius to the
general formula
in standard form.
Excellent!

Ok, now let us try to

determine the
equation of the
circle of the
following Who would (Students will
like to volunteer and participate)
go to the board?

1.Find the equation

of a circle with the
2 1
center is at (− 3 , 2)
and its radius 5
units.
2. Find the equation
of a circle with the
1 1
center is at (3 , 2)
and its radius 9
units.
3.Find the equation
of a circle with the
2 1
center is at (3 , − 2)
and its radius 5
units.
4Find the equation
of a circle with the
center is at the
origin and its radius
11 units.

Very good!

F. Generalization What have you Ma’am! I have

learned from our learned that
discussion this there …………..
morning?

Excellent!

G. Valuing Arithmetic
progressions are not
just a simple kind of
a sequence in the
mathematical genre.
Arithmetic
progressions are
sequences, a series
of order and pattern,
and we can find
them everywhere.
For example, in a
dentist’s clinic.
There are numbers
being distributed
which will determine
your position on the
line as you wait your
turn to be called by
the dentist. Would
you interrupt the line
and squeeze
yourself in even
though you know
who should come
first and next? No,Maam!
What about you,
would you do the
same? Yes, Maam!
Ok, now that is what
you call good. Do
you have any None, Maam
questions?
Very well. Please
get ¼ sheet of
paper, we’ll have a
quiz.

IV. EVALUATION

1. Write the standard form equation of a circle with a radius of 5 and a center
(-3,6).
2. Determine the center and radius in the given equation (𝑥 − 2)2 +
(𝑦 + 5)2 = 52 .
3. Determine the center and radius of the given equation then draw the
graph.

V. ASSIGNMENT

1. Consider a cell phone tower whose location is represented by the point (-

2,4) on the coordinate plane and whose radius of cell coverage is 3 miles.
Note that every 3 miles away from the cell tower will be on the boundary of
the cell coverage. Draw the graph out of the given situation and
determine the equation of a circle using the given.
2. How do we compute for equation of a circle using standard form?
