“Solitary flame of mathematical genius during the middle ages” (V. Hoggatt). This quotes
was refer to Leonardo Fibonacci the man that discover about Fibonacci sequence. Leonardo
was an Italian mathematician who lived around 1170 to 1250. He spent most of his life in
Pisa. The name of ‘Fibonacci’ is mostly known today not because Leonardo was the man
who introduced into Europe but the first known references is in the Sanskrit tradition of
Prosody. Prosody was important in ancient Indian ritual. In the sixth century, the Indian
mathematician Virahanka showed how the sequence arises in the analysis of metres with
long and short syllables. Around 1135 and 1150, this sequences were discussed by Gopal
and Hemachandra.

In other words, Leonardo did not discovers the sequence that bears his name. The
sequence was given that name by the French Mathematician Eduord Lucas in 1870s. The
rabbit problem was just one of many hundreds of worked examples Leonardo gave in his

Fibonacci Numbers or Fibonacci Sequences is an unending sequence of natural numbers

1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, …

The rule for producing the new numbers in the sequence is that each number is the sum of
the two preceding numbers, so 1+1=2, 2+3=5, etc. This is how Leonardo solved the rabbit
problem.

The speciality and uniqueness of Fibonacci numbers was unnoticed evidence that occurs in
the life of nature. Studies that has been conducted by mathematicians has proved that
Fibonacci numbers exists in nature such as plants, animal and even human beings.

Among the fact the fact that there was the Fibonacci numbers is the number of petals on a
flower. For examples, the number of petal for a Columbine; 5 petals, Black-eyed Susan; 13
petals, Shasta Daisy; 21 petals, Field Daisies; 34 petals and too many kind of flower that
have petals in Fibonacci numbers (G. Roberts, 2012)

Moreover, a sunflower head or the base of a pine cone have spirals going in opposite
directions. The amount of spiral in sunflower will be noticed 34 clockwise paired respectively
with 21 anticlockwise.
For addition, Fibonacci numbers are very closely linked to the golden ratio, ɸ also known as
phi. Phi in Fibonacci numbers are the result of the division of two Fibonacci numbers. For
example, 89/55 = 1.6182 ... 144/89 = 1.6179 ... 233/144 = 1.6181 and will always remain on
the 1618 figure. Golden Ration is the sum between two quantities and the larger one is the
same as the ratio between the larger one and the smallest. It is approximately 1.618. There
are various relationships between Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio, particularly
among God’s creation.

For example, a human finger be measured in Fibonacci sequence 2, 3, 5, 8, and if the


measured finger lengths and compared to dimpled finger length, the golden ratio, 1. 618 will
be produced. In 16th century, a philosopher Heinrich Agrippa had been discovered a
relationship to the golden ratio with drew a man over a pentagram inside a circle. This is
mean that all parts of human’s body was closed to the Golden Ratio.

Moreover, Golden Rectangle is any rectangle that has length and breadth equal to golden
ratio. The correlation between mathematics and arts have also been shown since Egypt and
Greek that mentioned the use of golden ratio in a square in the design of monument. For
example, Egyptian Pyramids, the Parthenon and the Colloseum. The Pyramid of Egypt
described that the difference between base and high of pyramid will produced the golden
ratio.

In addition, the Golden spiral can be exists inside the Golden Square. Golden Spiral is a
spiral that derived from the Fibonacci sequence. For instance, the sea shells that have spiral
hard shells. The comparison between the long line at the front of spiral and a subsequent
spiral it will give a result of golden ratio, it is 1.618. The same applies to anything that is
created in nature and have a circle in a spiral, such as the turbulent waves, eggs, human’s
ear, and many more when the differences between the past and the previous long spiral
produced a golden ratio.

The most special and mysterious in Fibonacci Numbers and Golden Ratio is concerned with
the Kaaba in Mecca, which is the centre of the universe. This is proved where the distance
measured towards Northern of Mecca is 7631.68 km, while the distance measured towards
Southern of Mecca is 12348.32 km. When the two distances are compared, 12348.32 /
7631.68, then it showed the value of phi result, 1.618034299.

Besides, this mysterious is also closely linked in the Qur’an about Mecca in Surah Ali Imran
verse 96. The total number of letters in the verse is 47 letters. If it is divided by the number
phi, 47 / 1.618 = 29. The number 29 is the number of letters from the beginning of the
sentence up to the words Mecca. This Verse shows that the existence of Kaabah is an
approximately value of phi. As in the formula, 47 / 29 will produced 1.621 closed to the
nearest phi, 1.618. This showed that the Kaaba in Mecca is one of the magical things about
Fibonacci number and Golden Ratio.

In conclusion, the series of Fibonacci numbers and the Golden ratio truly proved that all the
nature in the world was created not by human but there is a special program that regulates
all life on earth. As Plato said, ‘Figures, in time, will guide us to the truth’.
