CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction.
Measuring of academic performance of students is challenging since student performance
is product of socio-economic, psychological and environmental factors (Syed Tahir Hijazi, 2006)
which is just one of the most current factors affecting the performance of the students as pointed
out by researchers. There is an ever growing interest in the concept of factors affecting the
education in the country with prime objective of maximizing profit by delivering high quality
education that produces well-educated, skilled, mannered students according to needs and
requirements of the dynamically growing market. This has been the concern of many researchers
in the worldwide setting as regards to the concern of uplifting the level of learning to the youth
which will in turn inherit this planet. However, to date, there are still no research/es that tackles
the schema of this in the local setting of Occidental Mindoro, particularly in the Municipality of
San Jose; this is the thing that the author wished to shed light into to further give clarity of the
concepts affecting the performance of the students, considering the local scenario of San Jose,
Occidental Mindoro. Specifically, this research, is focused mainly on finding out the notable
factors affecting the performance of the local group/s of students being catered by three private
schools in existence in the Municipality of San Jose which are Divine Word College of San Jose,
Philippine Central Islands College and lastly Holy Family Academy of San Jose.
Note that, there are two groups of students as generally perceived i.e. those who improve
and those who don’t improve. In this research, the proponent wanted to investigate into the very
causation as to why such scenario of improvement and non-improvement happens in the learners
catered by the three private schools, as mentioned; the purpose of this is to serve as a miniature
mirror to view an even greater sphere of student populace, the factors affecting their performance
in either positive and negative ways. In view of this, it is expected that this study can contribute to
find out the factors, which are responsible for student’s inelastic behavior towards study along
with identifying those factors, which help a student to make progress in his studies. A survey will
be conducted to collect information and responses of students, regarding factors affecting their
performance.
Research Locale
This study will be conducted in the Municipality of San Jose considering the three private
schools in the area that offers Junior High School Curriculum namely Divine Word College of San
Jose, Holy Family Academy and Philippine Central Islands College which is located in Barangay
8, San Roque and Barangay Central Respectively. Two of the said schools are being run by the
Catholic Church while the latter is mainly a privately owned and controlled school.
The municipality where the said schools are located borders the Municipality of Magsaysay
to the south and the Municipality of Rizal to the North. It is a first class municipality in the province
and can almost reach the state of being a city. The economic activities of the people living in San
Jose are diverse and varied; it is mainly farming in the rural areas and business in the urban areas.

education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the
development of human capital and is linked with an individual’s well-being and opportunities for
better living (Battle & Lewis, 2002). Hence, we must make this education at its utmost feasibility
in the school and we must impart the greatest possible level of education towards the learners we
are catering in schools. Furthermore, knowing that education, if made proper ensures the
acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable individuals to increase their productivity and
improve their quality of life. This increase in productivity also leads towards new sources of
earning which enhances the economic growth of a country (Saxton, 2000). Wherefore, it is best
that we must find out soon enough the possible factors that may affect the possibility of imparting

findings of research studies focused that student performance is affected by different factors such
as learning abilities because new paradigm about learning assumes that all students can and should
learn at higher levels but it should not be considered as constraint because there are other factors
like race, gender, sex that can affect student’s performance. In addition to this, other noteworthy
factors also has been considered in the modern setting such as Social Media and Addiction thereof
(Osharive Peter, 2015). Furthermore, this is also influenced by other noteworthy and somewhat
common scenario such as absenteeism and other behavioral problems among the students (Naila
