TEAMING AT DISNEY ANIMATION

Section C, Group 4
Problem Statement
To instil autonomy in the new teams and to consider and develop changes in consequence
to the teaming model at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The new organizational structure is likely to be an upgrade over the older one because of
the following reasons:

- This is a matrix structure which will lead to faster and higher knowledge sharing because of
more decentralization

- More responsive to changes because of the higher flexibility in the newer model

- Employees are more involved than before which makes the employees feel valuable to the
organization which in turn will improve their efficiency

- Employees will now put the company first instead of their 'silos' which will reduce resource
hoarding and lead to better status for the organization

- This structurefostered creativity and employees are now given a secondary task that they
are good at which will improve employee satisfaction and productivity

Key takeaway

A key take away from this case is that the appropriate organizational structure crucially
depends on the business environment the organization operates in

Since Disney worked in a rapidly changing technological environment and needed critical
coordination of all departments involved, it was a necessity for it to discard the functional structure
