Animation 11
District Number: SD # 67
Board/Authority Signature:
Prerequisite(s): None
Special Training, Facilities or Equipment Required: Computers with Maya animation software
Course Synopsis:
This course has been developed to support and encourage the growing interest in animation by our student body.
Students will learn the basics of computer animation: modelling, animating and rendering through Maya animation
software. They will also be introduced to more complex animation processes: rigid body dynamics, particle effects,
paint effects, texturing and expressions. The learning material format for this course will be a combination of
demonstration lectures and tutorials. Students will have a chance to demonstrate the skills they have learned through
many small projects and one large final project. Learning outcomes for this course are grouped under the curriculum
organizers: Personal Management, Computer Literacy, Animation Process, and Ethics.
Organizational Structure:
Students will get started on the animation basics: modelling, animation, and rendering. The Modelling component will
look at the two major methods for creating surfaces: NURBS and polygons. The animation component will look at
keyframe animation, set driven key animation and path animation. The rendering component will look at differing
methods of rendering, shading surfaces, and lighting and camera angles. The learning material format for this unit will
be a combination of demonstration lectures and individual based tutorials. Students with Animation 10 credit are not
required to complete this unit.
All students will be required to complete this unit; however, their will be different time allocations depending on the
student’s animation prerequisite. For the first part of the unit, students will use the internet to search for online tutorials.
They will compile a report listing tutorials of interest, stating what skills can be gained from each tutorial. Students will
then choose three tutorials to complete. The second part of the unit will consist of a number of assigned small projects.
The projects will be presented to the students in a design brief format.

Assessment Components:
40 % of the grade will be based on the completion and quality of the assigned tutorials.
10 % of the grade will be based on the completion of the daily log book and the completion of self evaluations on
completed projects/tutorials.
50% of the grade will be based on the final project. This encompasses the quality and quantity of the final project.
This mark also includes submission of the following components: proposal, progress reports and production
schedule sheets.
