Bishop Community ~
We have had a very successful first month of school; thank you for your collaboration with transitioning your child
into the new school year! Everyone seems well-adjusted and has become familiar with their classroom and school
expectations.

The areas of focus for our staff and students this year are:​ ​Social Emotional Learning​- to include ​Mindfulness​, ​setting
personal goals-​ ​academic and personal, and​ ​perseverance​.​ In addition to this focus, we put much emphasis on our
Core Values of:​ Respect ​(for others, yourself, and your surroundings), ​Responsibility​​ (for the choices we make), and
Regard​​ (for others and their differences). When a community believes in the same values and understands what is
expected to succeed, the sky's the limit!

Arlington Youth Counseling Center (AYCC)

Did you know that Arlington Youth Counseling Center (AYCC) has a social worker in each of the Arlington
Public Schools to help with the social and emotional wellbeing of our students? Please support this critical
agency and come to this fabulous annual Gala on Friday, October 26th, at the Arlington Town Hall. For

Daily Drop Off

We have had a few days of rain upon arrival to school, which has resulted in an indoor arrival process. On rainy days
when we run an indoor arrival, you will notice a RED FLAG mounted on the Bishop School sign, out in front of the
building. When you see the RED FLAG, students K-2 will report to the Gym, with grades 3-5 reporting to the
cafeteria.
Once the snow begins to fall and the temperatures drop below 20 degrees (including wind chill), we will run the
same arrival procedure.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in making our arrival a safe, efficient, and pleasant process​​.

School Directory - DUE ASAP!

This year, the Bishop school directory will be created from information you enter on line. If you have received
an email from “Arlington School Directory” please go to the link in the email or the one below and update your
information, including your child(ren)’s grades. You can also update your school news subscriptions here, for
example, receiving the first grade news instead of the kindergarten news. Refer to the flyer sent out in the
backpack mail last week or the link below for more information.

Wednesday Morning School Garden Volunteers Needed

Does your child tell you about all the fun they have in the Bishop School Garden? We invite interested
parents and caregivers to join us in the Garden on Wednesday mornings, when we open the Garden during
morning recess for all students to come in, harvest some veggies, grab a garden snack, or help with other
garden chores. No Garden experience is needed. Our Garden Educator, Abby Wolf will be there leading
informal activities for the children. Please join us - it's a great way to get involved with the school and to learn
about gardening in the process. Please use the ​link ​for more information and to sign-up. ​.

Spirit Wear Orders

The next spirit wear order will be placed November 1st in hopes of receiving them in time for holiday gifts.
The first Friday of every month, students are encouraged to wear their Bishop t-shirts or Bishop colors
(yellow/gold and blue). Order forms were distributed this week via backpack mail or download an ​Order Form
and return with payment to your child’s teacher.

Shop at Amazon, Stop and Shop, Shutterfly and other (online) retailers and a percentage of all your shopping
comes right back to Bishop at no extra charge to you. Some links have been updated for this school year.
Click around, shop around, but remember to start ​here!​ Better yet, bookmark the online pages for all your
future shopping. Please ask your friends and family to participate.

ISO Volunteer Leads

We have the critical need for the following areas. The coordinator positions can be shared among 2 people.
Being a lead is a fun and satisfying way to be involved in the Bishop community. Please consider
volunteering. Refer to previous newsletters for more information

Fundraising Assistant. ​Assist the Fundraising Coordinator.

Spirit Wear Coordinator.​​ Staff booths at school activities and manage spirit wear sales.

Science Night Coordinator (5th grade host). ​Organize the Science Night’s events, which takes place on
April 4, 2019.

UPCOMING PTO-SPONSORED EVENTS

Green Team
Friday Mornings @ 7:30 AM
The Bishop Green Team will be meeting this Friday morning at 7:30 AM in the conference room in the main
office. Everyone is welcome, we just ask that kindergarteners and 1st graders come with a guardian. For the
next several weeks we will be learning about fossil fuels, renewable energies, and climate change. We will be
discussing different ways we can reduce our carbon footprint by taking action as individuals and as a
community. Please contact ​Jen Davidson-Jardeleza​ with any questions.

Walk-A-Thon (2nd grade host)

Tomorrow, Friday, 10/19
The 2018 Bishop Walk-A-Thon will be held on Friday, October 19th right after school on the Bishop Field.
Students from all grades (K-5) may participate in the 30-minute run/walk. Set up your personal ​fundraising page
to let your family and friends support your student. The online fundraising tool is easy to use and greatly
reduces the administration burden of collecting pledges. Just enter your name and email address, then click
register. Finish setting up your site by following the on screen instructions. Your donors can pay by credit card
or if they prefer to send a check the donation is given a unique code so it is credited to the right person. Please
help check in the walkers and count their laps by ​signing up here​.

New this year​​ - a special surprise for the classroom with the most registered walkers!

Original Works
Thursday, 10/25

Parents, reminder that the deadline for submitting your child’s artwork for "Original Works” is October 25th.
Please have your child complete her/his artwork, fill out the form for ordering the various products with the
artwork printed on them, and send the artwork along with the order form (pls clip them together) with your child
to school. The teachers have been asked to designate a spot in their classrooms for the students to drop off

Announcing the BISHOP PLAY 2019!

We are thrilled to announce that this year’s play will be Mary Poppins, Jr. Once again, the production will be led
by the talented children’s theatre director Sarah Morrison and assistant director and choreographer Noa
Borankin.
There are MANY ways for students to participate in the play. Whether it is on stage as part of the cast, or
backstage as part of the tech crew, students at every grade level are welcome.

· Grades 4-5 can audition for large roles, register for supporting roles or participate in Tech Crew
· Grades 2-5 can register for midsize ensemble roles
· Grades K-1 can register for a small ensemble role

AHC Intramural and Instructional Hockey Programs

(Note: this is an update of last week’s item) Registration is now open for the Arlington Hockey Club's (AHC)
2018-2019 intramural programs including instructional league for both skaters and learn-to-skate,
developmental league, and in-house full ice program. These programs are all no-checking and practices and
games are held at Ed Burns Arena in Arlington. Arlington’s intramural programs focus on providing a fun
environment to learn and play hockey for children born between September 1, 2014 (instructional) and 2005
(in-house). ​AHC practices USA Hockey’s American Development Model in its program.

AYCC Annual Gala

Friday, 10/26, 7-11 PM, Arlington Town Hall

The Arlington Youth Counseling Center (AYCC) provides comprehensive, community-based mental health
services to youth and families in Arlington. Each year, hundreds of Arlington community members come
together to support the work of AYCC, promote the value of community mental health, and celebrate the year’s
accomplishments. This year, the gala will be honoring Arlington Police Chief Fred Ryan. In addition it will
feature raffles, a silent auction, live music by the Arlington High School Jazz band, hors d’oeuvres, and a cash
bar.

AYCC has been able to offer affordable, high quality, and community based mental health services for Arlington
residents thanks to the funds that are raised through the Gala, grants, corporate sponsors, and individual
donors. Tickets may be purchased ​online​ for the gala or ​donations​ made to AYCC. For more information, visit

Spooky Walk
Saturday, 10/27, 6:30-8:00 pm, Menotomy Rocks Park

Please join us for Spooky Walk at Menotomy Rocks Park (Jason Street entrance) on October 27th from
6:30-8:00 pm (rain date October 28th at the same time). I​t​’s a great way to get into the Halloween spirit and test
drive those costumes!

We're also looking for 4th-5th grade volunteers/adults to dress up or create a "spooky station." If you are

Parent Forum, ​“Changing the Culture Around Mental Health: It’s Past Time"
Tuesday, 10/30, 7-8:30 PM, Ottoson Middle School

PRESENTER: John Broderick is the Senior Director of Public Affairs at Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s R.E.A.C.T.
Mental Health Awareness Campaign. Broderick believes that “we have the ability to change the culture and the
way mental health is viewed.” For the past two years, he has spoken countless times about the five most
common signs of mental illness, in an effort to improve understanding and awareness of mental health.

John Broderick, the former chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, is leading a campaign to bring
mental illness out of the shadows. His son's mental illness had gone undiagnosed for nearly 20 years. ”I was
the parent and I didn’t see it. So he suffered for years,” “Then we had that horrible tragedy and he went to
prison. And I don’t know how he survived that.” In 2016 Justice Broderick agreed to co-chair the first statewide
launch in New Hampshire of a national mental health awareness campaign called Change Direction in New
Hampshire.
