Fourth Grade Home Reading Guide


Getting involved with your child’s English reading at home is a
great way to improve their comprehension, understanding, and
overall enjoyment. Your conversations can be in English or in the
language of the household. These questions can be used
before, during, or after your child does their nightly reading.
Your child’s nightly reading can become a gratifying and
educational family experience.

Reading fiction (소설) with your child:


1. Have your child read for 20-30 minutes
2. Have your child summarize what they read. A good fiction summary will include:
• Setting (where and when the story takes place)
• Character names
• Important events in order
• Problem
• Solution
3. Pick 3 questions and have a conversation (not a Q&A) about the book with your child

Reading and Discussing Nonfiction (비소설류) with your child:
1. Have your child read for 20-30 minutes
2. Have your child summarize what they read. A good non-fiction
summary will include:
• Topic
• Who-What-When-Where Information
• Main Idea
• Details that support the main idea
3. Pick 3 questions and have a conversation (not a Q&A) about the book with your child
