translated automatically – you may need
to add adjust blocks and worksheets to
your model to capture behaviors from
the original PRO/II model

Addressing Recycle Streams
How to handle the recycles:
• An intelligent recycle placement algorithm with place recycles in the

Aspen HYSYS flowsheet.
• If there are estimates for the recycles in the PRO/II input file, the
program will use these estimates to initialize the recycle streams in
Aspen HYSYS.
• If there are no estimates for the recycle streams, the program will
add estimates to the streams.

Addressing ‘global defines’
 Use HYSYS “SET” to handle variable define of the same type

of Unit Operation objects or streams if they are in a liner
relationship.
Example: DEFINE DUTY(BTU/HR) AS HX=C-H5, DUTY(BTU/HR), TIMES,-
0.185635

Addressing ‘global defines’
 Use a HYSYS “Spreadsheet” to relate different types of

variables to each other except the variable was not
translated to HYSYS.
Example: DEFINE CDP(PSI) AS VALVE=V1, PRES(PSIG), MINUS,36.765
Note: A message should be output in the main window if the define was not translated.

Addressing Column Convergence
For best results, use temperature profiles from the PRO/II

report file to initialize the columns in HYSYS.
You can use the ‘Reset’ button to rerun the column after
entering temperature data.

How is UOM mapped from PRO/II to Aspen
HYSYS?
 If certain UOM is available in both PRO/II and HYSYS, it will

be mapped directly. For example, 1 SEC in PRO/II will be
mapped to 1 seconds in HYSYS. If a PRO/II UOM is not
available in HYSYS, it will be converted to HYSYS default
UOM. For example, 1 KTONM in PRO/II will be converted to
1000 tonne in HYSYS.
 The “OutDimension” of PRO/II won’t be translated to HYSYS
automatically. Therefore, the displayed units in HYSYS may
be different from those in PRO/II. However, the quantities
are always correct and user can change the display units
manually when the conversion is done.

How are Reactions mapped from PRO/II to
Aspen HYSYS?
 In PRO/II input file, if there is reaction data, it could contain

2 kinds of information: equilibrium data and kinetic data.
HYSYS reaction is specified rigorously as conversion
reaction, kinetic reaction, equilibrium reaction and so on.
Therefore, certain reactions in PRO/II input file may be
mapped to multiple HYSYS reactions based on whether it’s
used as an equilibrium reaction or kinetic reaction.
 If certain reaction data is present in the input file, but never
used in the reactors, it won’t be transferred to HYSYS.
 SHIFT and METHANATION reactions are transferred to
HYSYS as normal user defined reactions.

How does the converter address PRO/II
reference streams?
 If stream source unit operation is null, the stream data

defined in Property Stream will be converted.
 If stream has source and is in a recycle loop, the data may
be used as estimate values for recycle.
 If reference stream source unit operation is null, HYSYS
Balance, Set & Tee may be used to covert “REFSTREAM”
information (Tee is used only when Rate is specified )
 If reference stream is an internal stream (has source) and
the “REFSTREAM” provides estimate values, it may be only
converted as estimate values for recycle when reference
stream in a circle.

How does the converter address heating and
cooling curves?
 Stream HCurve is translated to HYSYS Property Table.

Warning is issued if user needs to add bounds manually.
 Simple/Rigorous HX HCurve uses Plots page in Performance
tab of the HYSYS Heater/Cooler/HX. All the viewing
variables are selected in Set-up page while the phase
viewing options are all enabled in Tables page. If “Steady
State Rating” mode is chosen for Rigorous HX, a warning
message saying “HCurve won’t work in this mode” is
displayed.
 HYSYS Heater is added to handle LNGHX/AirCooler HCurves.
These two objects share the same inlet and outlet streams.
 Column HCurve is handled by its internal heater/cooler
directly.

Unit Operation Conversion Notes
Sometimes, extra equipments are needed in HYSYS to get a

correct mapping to PRO/II input files. For example,
1. If a PRO/II compressor has a cooler associated with it, a
cooler will be added in HYSYS;
2. A valve will be added after a mixer to control the
pressure.
3. A 3-phase separator may be added to some containers to
get W, V, L products.
4. A mixer may be added to mix the feeds of some
equipments to get the DTFEED.
5. A mixer may be added to get a mixed product.

converted to HYSYS?
 Unit Operations:
– DRYER, RFILTER, FCENTRIFUGE, CCDECANTER, DISSOLVER,
CRYSTALLIZER, BLEND, MEMBRANE
 Controllers & Execution Control
– Controller, MVC
– Global specifications
– Calculators and procedures
 Obsolete PRO/II keywords normally won’t be converted.
– The converter is based on PRO/II V8.3
