It has been my pleasure to work with Jenny Gieselman from Brandon Public School District. Our
relationship began as we co-planned professional learning for K-5 teachers. Brandon adopted a new
mathematics resource, Bridges 2, and Jenny and I were tasked with planning and facilitating professional
learning to support teachers in their implementation of the resource. Jenny’s insight into the struggles the
teachers were having and what our focus of each session needed to be to address teacher struggles was
invaluable to the success of the professional learning sessions. In addition to facilitating the professional
learning, Jenny, worked as a mathematics coach to support teachers as they worked on implementing all
the different components of the new resource. Much of this work centered on switching to inquiry based
instruction which included student to student discourse, implementing center-based instruction as a
component of the new instruction, as well as classroom management, organization of materials and
pacing. Her work as a coach gave her opportunities to study the Michigan K-12 Standards for
Kindergarten through Fifth Grade and help teachers make sense of the expectations for mathematics
learning at each grade. With this insight she was able to help teachers understand the vertical alignment
of the standards and the progression of conceptual understanding from grade to grade. This vertical
articulation knowledge was put to good use as Jenny and other selected teachers created curriculum in
Atlas Rubicon.
Although Jenny was a mathematics coach, she never left the classroom always teaching at least half the
day. Jenny is a well-respected colleague. Her friendly and approachable demeanor helped her build
relationships with all the teachers she worked with. She engaged in collaborative problem solving with
teachers, modeled instruction, and provided positive leadership for all the elementary teachers. As part of
her leadership, Jenny was assigned the role of Mathematics Leadership Team (MLT) Representative for
the elementary level in Brandon. As a MLT representative, Jenny attended the Oakland County
Mathematics Leadership Team meetings where she collaborated with other MLT representatives from
other districts. Through these interactions, Jenny and representatives from 3 other districts formed a
Bridges work group where they shared successes and challenges as a group and helped one another
problem solve. This shows the positive initiative that Jenny takes and her willingness to collaborate and
problem solve with others.
I believe that Jenny would make a great addition to any staff. Her ability to form positive, collaborative
relationships with staff, students and parents is invaluable. In addition, her deep understanding of the
Michigan Mathematics K-5 Content and Practice Standards will provide any district with the necessary
knowledge to create a viable curriculum and support quality learning opportunities for all students. I
hope you will afford her the opportunity to become a leader in your district.
Sincerely,
