GAD ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT 2017

In response to the commitment of the Department of Education to integrate gender

equality into the principles, goals and processes of Philippine education, the Tupsan
National High School teaching and non-teaching staff ventured a Gender and Development
activity in Surigao del Sur last May 12 – 14, 2017. The highlight of the activity was the
seminar – workshop on gender – based harassment and GAD related laws held at Mac
Arthur’s Place, Britania, San Agustin, Surigao del Sur. Seventy-two percent (72%) of the
teaching staff were able to join in the said activity. The group visited different sites to have
an immersion for TNHS personnel and ocular inspection to different sites for the
disaster/emergency management. The sites includes those that are risky and needs a
thorough and well-managed emergency preparedness like services in resorts such as island
hopping emergency preparedness management, Tinuy-an falls and Enchanted River
emergency management, etc. The group also visited the San Agustin LGU for more insights
regarding GAD. It was noted that many of the establishments in Surigao del Sur had women
employees. One example is the successful International Doll House which was founded by a
woman. After each activity and site visits, the group evaluated the each day’s events and
the school head conducted an informal open forum during dinner. Overall, the activity was
successful. Teachers realized that their awareness on GAD was enhanced, having been
oriented with domestic issues and laws; women teaching staff gained knowledge on their
rights in domestic concerns; the TNHS personnel had noted best practices in
disaster/emergency management in each visited sites, and were able to share their
suggestions and comments to the management regarding safety; and 100% of the group
were satisfied and evaluated the activity as outstanding, worthwhile and worth to be
sustained in the succeeding years.
