According to the Philippines Environment Monitor 2006 report, it is estimated that 95% of wastewater
flowing from households directly or via septic tanks is transported into groundwater, public canals or
drainage systems, eventually entering rivers or other water bodies, especially in areas with no sewer
systems. As a result, it is reported that up to 58% of the country’s groundwater intended for drinking is
microbiologically contaminated with coliform.
