“BULLY” is a very common thing and almost every people know what is bully

are. The reason why I choose this topic because nowadays this bully cases
becomes very severe in our society especially among students, either primary
school, secondary school or tertiary level. This is because, just two weeks after the
death of National Defence University of Malaysia naval cadet Zulfarhan Osman
Zulkarnain, 21, from physical injuries believed to have been inflicted by his university
mates, another victim of bullying, death due to severe injury. T. Nhaveen, 18, was
believed to have been physically and sexually assaulted by his former schoolmates
in Penang. Statistics from the Education Ministry revealed that there were more than
14,000 cases of bullying in schools between 2012 and 2015, with most of them
involving physical bullying.

What are the causes of bullying? The main causes among bullies is the
weakness in their family unit, says Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE)
Malaysia chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim. They take a hostile approach
towards weak or lonely students at school to make up for the lack of control, love or
attention at home. Children resort to bullying because of various reasons, adding
that familial and social factors play a part. For an example, physical aggression
between parents and children may act as a modelling behaviour to youngsters, who
then carry out such behaviour at school. Name-calling and verbal put-downs
between parents and children also serve as a template for children in managing
social relationships. Neglectful factors facilitate children’s bullying behaviour, such as
a lack of empathy and warmth at home, and lack of parental guidance and
intervention in fostering positive and healthy characteristics in the young. Children
who lack a sense of right and wrong, and lack awareness of their strengths and
weaknesses may choose to bully others to gain ‘popularity’ or validation from their
peers, which is harmful.

From my opinion, parents and family institutions has most important role to
overcome this problem. Parents must give full attention and love to their children
and teach about the manners, moral values, teach how to respect others and tell
them about the consequences of bully. Parents must become good example of their
children. Parents also must alert to their children behaviours changes because if
they become victim or bullies they will show the symptoms. Not only that, parents
also must become good listeners to their children. By this way, children will tell and
share their problem towards parents.

I believe that schools should have a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying.

Any form of juvenile behaviour must be dealt with promptly and in a serious manner.
Students must be made to understand what constitutes bullying. There must be a
safe channel for bullying to be reported and establish standard operating procedures
and enforce them. In school, teachers has important role to prevent this bully cases.
Teachers must take serious if there any student report about he or she is being
bullied. Most children do not tell anyone when they are bullied. Rather as a teacher,
you can identify the possible signs that your kid is being bullied. For example,
complaining about headaches, preventing school activities as well as dropping
grades are the best signs that something has gone wrong. Communication is the key
to build rapport. If the teachers establish open communication with the students, their
students may feel open to talk to them about bullying or other different problems.

In school, I believe there are few places where bullying normally occurs such
as hallway, bathroom, classroom and so on. Make sure an adult is always present in
these areas. If a teacher or staffs is posted in such area, the children will feel safer
and also bullying is less likely to happen. Teachers should always become alert
when several students are present in one place. Another options is to put CCTV all
around the school especially “hotspot” area to monitor students activity because
camera is never lying. Last but not least, parents, teachers, school and government
must work together to fight bully.
