Anne-senpai’s Guide to Answering Defense Questions!!!

= Sup! Since I am always sent as a delegate in Science Congresses, I always see and watch
this part of the Congress where people older than you (who are obviously Science nerds
forever) grill you with questions about your Investigatory Project on stage. (Nag-defend na ko
dun nung umabot ng finals yung IP namin, promise sobrang nakakakaba pero masaya tas yung
mga Paulinian pa galling iba’t-ibang lupalop ng Pilipinas yung nandun soooo yeah.) But anyway,
I cited this experience because I wanted you to know that I know what I’m talking about… and
that is, answering questions during defenses!

I made this for the Pre-Oral Defense (which is postponed until our teacher comes back from
sickness). Since she’s still sick, I decided to make a guide for my fellow people kasi natutuyo
lalamunan ko kaka-explain in detail irl (bantay-sarado din ako ng nanay ko and trip kong
gumawa so yeah.)

These tips are mostly my opinions na sa tingin ko ay makakatulong sa inyo lol.

The whole thing is mostly English pero minsan di ko na kayang i-English kaagad yung mga
naiisip ko so Taglish yan.

1. Why did you choose your title? (Obviously in the list lol)
- “We have agreed on this title because of its convenience and relevance to
us. It is convenient for us since the field of our research will be the factors
which affect STEM student, which we are; and since it is on STEM, it is
relevant to us.”

- Translation: “Napag-sang-ayunan po naming ang aming title dahil


magiging mas madali at may kinalaman po ito sa amin. Mas madali po ito
samin kasi ang pinaggagalawan po ng aming pananaliksik ay ang factors o
mga bagay na nakakaapekto sa mga STEM students, kung saan kabilang
po kami; at dahil nga po nasa STEM ito[ng pananaliksik], ito po ay may
kinalaman sa amin.”

- Tip: State your main idea first. Then give at least two or three supporting
ideas. Explain each idea, and summarize the whole thing kung sa tingin
mo hindi pa din ok yung judge dun sa sinasagot mo lol.

- Tip: Always state logical reasons. Para hindi mabubutasan yung sinasagot
mo at yung research mo lol.

2. Who did you intend to help with your research?


3. What is the goal of your research?
- Who and What are easily answered by stating the first chapter of the
research in Significance of the Study and the Objectives, and elaborating
further.
4. Why did you create this research?
- Kasi po pinapagawa samin ni Miss Cherry. (De joke lang kapag sinagot mo
yun magiging palakol grade mo sa Practical Research.)

- Tip: Most of the stuff that the panel asks you can be answered by
knowing your research well, that’s why you should give the whole thing a
good read before the date of the defense.

- “Because we wanted to help the (people in your Significance of the Study)


to determine the factors that affect STEM students in a way that we can
do as students, because we want to contribute to society, especially them.
It is important to know that… (bla bla stuff from your Objectives chuchu
eklavurrr.)”
- Translation: “Kasi po gusto po naming makatulong sa ating komunidad
lalo na sa (yung mga tao sa Significance). Kasi po gusto namin na may
magawa po kami na kaya naming yung hindi po out-of-reach pero
nakakatulong pa din po sa ating lahat. Alam niyo naman po siguro na ang
mga estudyante… (blablablbalbalbalbalbablblbalablablbalabla.)

5. Where did you conduct this research? Is there anywhere else you have
conducted your research?
- Duh, St. Paul.
- And nowhere else.
- Tip: If you did go somewhere else to gather data for your research, do tell
the panel. And if they ask you why, tell them you did that to widen the
scope of your study and gather information that is different from what you
expect (to observe variance).

6. Why did you put __________ in your Related Literature? In what way is this
related to your study?
- (Tinatanong ng judge kasi hindi niya nakita yung relate ng nilagay mo sa
RRL. YAN KASI NAGLALAGAY LANG NG KUNG ANO BASTA MAY
NAIRELATE LANG!!!!!!) lol joke heto solution ko kung sakali.

- For instance, tinanong ng judge kung ano kinalaman ng “Financial


Constraint” sa study mo na “Factors Affecting the Productivity of STEM
Students.” Nililito ka lang niya kasi ganito lang sagot diyan:

- “Financial constraint affects whether the parents can afford education or


not. It depends on the financial state of the family; if the family can barely
manage to buy the necessities for schooling, then the student’s quality of
learning and productivity will decrease. However, if the family can afford
it, then these characteristics will be improved.”
- (Eto yung tagalog kung sakaling nosebleed ka:) “Ang pagkakaroon
ng paghihirap ay nakakaapekto sa kakayahang magpa-aral ng magulang.
Nakadepende ito sa pinansyal na kalagayan ng pamilya; kung mahirap
lamang sila tsaka halos hindi na nila kayang bilhin yung mga
pangangailangan sa pag-aaral, mababawasan ang kalidad at pagiging
produktibo nung estudyante. Pero kung kayang tustusan ng pamilya ang
mga pangangailangan ito, madadagdagan o mas gaganda ang kalidad at
pagiging produkitbo niya.”

Yung mga specific na tanong tulad ng kapag tinanong ka ni Miss tungkol sa #2 nung
Objectives ninyo madali nalang basta’t alam mo yung research ninyo. Kung di mo
masyadong gamay yung knowledge itanong mo sa gumawa nung part na yun para mai-
explain niya sayo. Actually, I suggest na mag-usap kayo as a group tungkol lang sa IP
ninyo, parang i-ccriticize niyo yung sarili ninyo research para sa gayon ma-warm up
kayo at maging prepared kayo sa mga itatanong sa inyo. Dapat seryoso hindi yung
mauuwi sa chika lang para naman mailigtas ninyo grades ninyo. We’re all in the same
boat, fam.
