(h) shafting coupling bolts,
(i) engine supports,
(j) thrust pads.
13. Describe an emergency generating plant for use in the event of complete failure of the main electrical
installation and make particular reference to: -
(f) starting arrangements,
(g) cooling systems,
(h) fuel and its supply,
(i) periodic attention required,
(j) location.
14. What limits the height above the surface of liquid from which a pump can be made to lift on its
suction side? What are the maximum lifts you would expect from -
(d) a reciprocating pump,
(e) a simple centrifugal pump,
(f) a screw displacement pump?
What factors could reduce the efficiency of each of these types?
16. Draw a line diagram of a freon refrigerator cycle and indicate the operating pressures and
temperatures.
Detail the position of automatic condition sensing devices and explain how these operate to control
the running of the machine.
17. Describe how the following variables are measured and their readings displayed automatically at
some central station: -
(g) scavenge air pressure or forced draught fan air pressure,
(h) main engine speed,
(i) boiler water level.
18. Sketch and describe a marine tele-motor transmitter, receiver and associated piping. Describe how the
system:
(d) allows for expansion and contraction of the fluid,
(e) is protected from the effects of vibration and shock at the receiver, being conveyed back to the
transmitter,
(f) can be purged of air locks.

EXAMINATION OF MARINE ENGINEER OFFICER
ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE
(GENERAL)
CLASS II
(Time allowed - 3 hours)
Total Marks 100
INDIA Morning Paper
2. You have been appointed as the Second Engineer of a ship which has a transverse bow thruster unit
using a controllable pitch propeller. A specific problem has arisen in the power developed by the
bow thruster. There is possibly a need to change the prime mover for the controllable pitch propeller.
Draft a letter to the owners explaining the technicalities of selection of a prime mover giving
adequate reasons for selection of a thrust unit delivering a relatively low pressure head with high
volume output rather than a high pressure head with low volume output. (16)
3. The vessel on which you are serving has been subjected to port state control. The procedures for port
state control apply to ships which come under the provision of certain international convention and
protocols. State those conventions and protocols and specifically point out the areas covered by
certification, which are issued under these conventions and protocols.
(16)
5. A shaft system is excessively misaligned so as to cause serious bending of the shaft. State what effect
this could have on: -
(8)
(c) Shaft coupling bolts.
(d) Shaft bearing
Having identified the effects in (a) and (b) state which one of them would cause more reason for
concern and why? (8)
6. Reverse Osmosis is the modem alternative for shipboard production of drinking water:
(c) Describe, using simple diagrams where necessary, the principles of: (10)
(i) Osmosis (ii) Reverse Osmosis
(d) What maintenance is essential to ensure satisfactory functioning of such a system? (6)
21. (a) Sketch a nozzle/flapper device used for the generation of pneumatic signal, labeling the
component parts. (8)
(d) Describe the operation of the device in Q. 6(a) (4)
(e) State a particular equipment on board ships which uses your device explaining the functioning of
that equipment. (4)
22. Using simple sketches to illustrate water flow or reaction, describe how a rudder can steer a vessel or
act as a velocity retarder. With reference to arresting the headway of very large vessels explain: (16)
(d) Why full astern power is usually less than full ahead power;
(e) Why rudder adapted to act as retarders have not been successful;
(f) The part that a transverse thrust unit could play in reducing stopping distance.
10. The emergency bilge suction valve is typically used for one or combination of the following:
(e) to inject cleaning additives when the bilges are extremely dirty
(f) when the main condenser becomes fouled, in order to provide additional cooling water circulation
(g) to connect the rose box to the independent bilge suction
(h) if the bilges become flooded and they can not be emptied by any other means
State the correct answer giving specific reasons, why the emergency bilge suction and not any other
bilge suction valve is used for the purpose. (16)
