I. Personal Statement:
Dear Micah Jones and Dean Dicciani,
In my first two years at UArts, I have truly enjoyed all my experiences, accepted all challenges
and learning curves that have come with the transition to higher education and most of all, that I feel “at
home” here among the students, faculty and the UArts community.
In my visits to schools and attendance at meetings and conferences, I am offen asked by colleagues about my new job
and it is those things I mentioned, along with the level of talent that I witness each and every day at UArts that I rave about. As I
often share… I really had no intention of leaving my previous job, not even through the application process and phone
interviews until the day I arrived on campus for the in-person interviews, faculty lunch and sample teaching lesson. At the
conclusion of that day, (beacuase of each one of the people I encountered) I knew without a doubt, that this was the team of
musicians, teachers and just cool people with whom I wanted to collaborate in the next chapter in my career.
In my first year, my teaching responsibilities included conducting classes at the graduate and undergraduate level, the
percussion instrument/ methods class, supervising student teachers in the MAT program and overseeing the Music Minor
program. Working with Beth as a mentor was fantastic and made the learning curve and transition for me a fantastic experience.
Team teaching the MAT Lab with Matt & Beth and also sharing the Student Teaching Seminar with Beth really helped give me
and the program for the MAT students a “team” approach to our Music Education goals. I also took on a couple of conducting
students privately which became a highlight of each week.
In my second year, with Beth leaving UArts, I have taken over all duties, communications and scheduling concerning
the Music Education Minor and MAT programs. I have been scheduing all the fieldwork placements for student teaching and
fieldwork observations and making contacts with new schools and new teachers (many in the Philadelphia area), and teaching
both the MAT Seminars as well as the NEW Fieldwork I & II weekly seminar meetings. This weekly meeting with the minor
students during their fieldwork has been extremely productive and enjoyable. Guest speakers have also been brought in several
times during the semester to augment the students experience.
Over the past 3 semesters I have designed and continued to improved my courses (which can also be viewed in full
online at: www.keithwhodgson.com/uarts). I have also enjoyed the process of tweaking the syllabus, lesson plans and
assignments to keep improving the course experience for the students. I am very happy with the change and improvement I am
seeing in the students from semester to semester. MOST OF ALL… What I am most energized about in my job, is the successes I
am seeing from our student teachers during their observations in their school placements. THIS is what everything else we are
doing is all about. Preparing them to be successful!
I am looking forward to expanding our team and working with a new Music Education colleague as well as facing the
challenges that the move in next few years will bring to the School of Music.
