Save Water. Prevent War.

by Dave Lyle Tumanguil
“For survival!” exclaimed the pre-historic beings of old.
“For Greece!” shouted King Leonidas and his brave 300 Spartans.
“For Rome!” roared Alexander the Great and conqueror of many.
“For the name of the king!” chanted the chivalrous knights in shining armor.
“For glory!” howled the Crusaders of Italy.
“For freedom!” Cried our Katipunero patriots.
“For water!” growled the future humanity in their war for water.

“Without water, living is impossible.”

Indeed, water, no matter how wide like the ocean and high like rain; if wasted
and abused will soon be consumed to the last drop. If consumed therefore, no life, no
beauty, no growth will ever take place. And the world will be in its lost, fallen, barren,
and gloomy state. The blissful, paradisiac state of the world will be turned to a lifeless
desert without water. Thus, the importance of water exemplified.

“To a thirsty man, a drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold.”

Water covers 2/3 of the Earth but only 0.0002% is drinkable. Therefore, the
gigantic façade of the world is just mere disguise to the truth that water; drinkable
water is just a tiny drop compared to the width of the great ocean.
Like the sun and earth the difference between water and drinkable
water is superb. That being stated, intensifies and adds more weight
to the importance of saving water.

“As the trumpets are sounding, drummer drumming

In trance forming, war is approaching
Havens are fortified, for water justified
Dreadful! O dreadful that day must be!”
- An excerpt from Sayonara’s poem “Save Water. Prevent War!”

DOST-SEI Symposium: A Helpful Jaunt

by Hiang Shan Laguna

It was July 25, 2017 when representatives from Department of

Science and Technology came to Carigara National High School. DOST
conducted a symposium on their available scholarships and the terms and
agreement to be considered. Qualifications and skills were also discussed. “Poor,
deserving and talented! “that’s the repeated words of the DOST Representative
as they discussed the qualifications for DOST-SEI on Grade 12 students.
Then afterwards created a noisy, humorous rite across the Grade 12 students.
The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of
Science and Technology (DOST) provides scholarships to deserving and
talented young people who wish to pursue lifetime careers in Science
and Technology through its undergraduate scholarship programs.
The college courses are Science, Mathematics and Technology related.
A highly competitive science and technology scholarship examination
is being administered annually wherein applicants should pass it as one of
the eligibility requirements for the awarding of the DOST-SEI Undergraduate
Scholarships. But within the last two years this scholarship program has been at
a standstill due to the change of the curriculum and this year is the continuance.
The examination shall be made available to incoming college
freshmen who shall come from the first batch of the graduating students
of the DepEd K-12 Program Senior High School. This scholarship
examination is designed to measure abilities that determine academic and
professional success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
It was indeed a fun and informative way to
tell the students of opportunities that DOST can offer.

Better sports selection for

better Philippine athletes!
Who would ever forget this year’s
SEA games? This year marks the
worst performance of Philippines
in the Southeast Asian Games.
Why is this so? The answer is so
simple. Better sports selection for
the Philippine athletes. In every
international competition that we
take part in, we need to send our
best and nothing less. I say we must

select the most skilled, trained and
have enough experience in such
events. Have you noticed? The most
popular players or athletes always gets to be in the limelight of Philippine Sports. They get selected without
filtering and analysis of skills. They get selected because of the fame connected to their names.

For the better, whether you agree or not, as to what I have observed, we need pick athletes that have
gone through several trainings, athletic events, and experienced. Furthermore, we must have a permanent
team members of the Philippine team. A changed of player every year would cause lack of chemistry and
experience for that particular player and for the team and nation that he/she represents. So that we can
achieve the goal of having trained, skilled and experienced athletes, this things must be done! Better sports
selection! Better Philippine athletes!
