This procedure outlines how to check for pipe strain on horizontally and vertically mounted machines using dial indicators. For horizontal machines, two dial indicators are placed on the shaft to measure movement as flange bolts are tightened in three steps up to full torque. Readings after full tightening should not exceed 50 microns to avoid pipe strain. For vertical machines, the orientation of the machine relative to the pipe is specified for checking.

PIPE STRAIN CHECK PROCEDURE
1. For horizontally mounted machines
Two dial indicators are placed on the coupling hub or the shaft of the machine being checked for pipe strain . The two dial indicators will measure the machine shaft movement in the vertical and horizontal directions when the flange bolts will be tightened to the required torques . Connect the piping flanges to the machine flanges one by one and tighten the bolts to the required torque and checking the indicators readings. Note :Use the recommended gaskets. The tightening procedure as follows
Step 1 = 10% of the torque
Step 2 = 30% of the torque
Step 3 = 100%of the torque
After bolts has been fully tightened to the maximum torque .
Now check the indicator reading
Note :Reading may exceed 50 micron during tightening
process. The maximum shaft movement shall not exceed 50 microns . Maximum value the dial shall read = 50 microns .
2. For vertically mounted machines.
Horizontal orientation is perpendicular to the pipe centerline when viewed from top .
Vertical orientation is parallel to the pipe centerline when viewed from top.
