WWF - PHILIPPINES
Your local to global environmental organization

Who We Are
Since being founded in 1961, WWF has become the world's largest and most respected conservation
organization. WWF now operates in more than 100 countries, supported by nearly five million people worldwide.

WWF-Philippines, also known as Kabang Kalikasan ng Pilipinas (KKP), has been working as a national
organization of the WWF network since 1997. The organization's conservation program places strong emphasis
on the conservation of marine species and habitats and utilizes highly integrative and participatory approaches to
find solutions that work for the environment and for the people that live in and depend on it.

The scope of WWF’s work has now broadened. We now engage corporations in addressing their environmental
impacts and to integrate sustainability measures into core business processes. The imminent danger of climate
change renders our corporate focus all the more critical as industry is a major contributor to global greenhouse
gas emissions.
The Philippines is home to the richest variety of wildlife on earth, ranking 10th in the world for its biological
diversity. The country’s myriad of forests, coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangroves, lakes and rivers breed an
impressive array of plant and animal species. Biodiversity and the services they render support critical life
systems that provide us with food, water, clean air, clothing and medicine. We work with individuals, the
government, private companies and institutions to secure these resources for the country. WWF’s Board of
Trustees oversees the overall strategic directions of the organization, led by our Chairman, Mr. Vincent Pérez,
and our Vice-Chair and CEO, Mr. Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan.

Our Mission
We aim to stop and eventually reverse the accelerating degradation of the Philippine environment to build a future
in which Filipinos live in harmony in nature.

The conservation of natural life today is crucial to tomorrow's survival. It is within this context that we tirelessly
pursue our mission of preserving genetic species and ecosystem diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable
natural resources is sustainable and promoting actions to reduce pollution and wasteful consumption of resources
and energy.

Our Vision
We envision a Philippines where globally-significant biodiversity is properly protected and harnessed to sustain
life for all and where species, habitats and resources form part of a unique heritage that every Filipino is proud of.
We champion conservation in areas where marine biodiversity matters the most.

Who Benefits?
Poor fisher and farm communities, local businesses and local government units for ecotourism and sustainable
poverty alleviation measures. Corporations benefit heavily from engagement with WWF in cost savings and long-
term sustained profitability in addressing environmental impacts and resource efficiency. WWF works the
spectrum of sustainable development from communities to corporations - impacting no less than the whole
country.
WWF Project Sites
WWF implements conservation and
development projects in 11 provinces
and at least 28 towns. Our field projects
support local efforts in coastal resources
management, community-based
ecotourism, management of protected
areas, environmental law enforcement,
sustainable land-development and other
initiatives.

In the field, we safeguard the last

Dolphins of the Tañon Strait in Negros

Islands in Tawi-Tawi, Dugongs of Roxas
in Palawan, Tuna stocks of the Sulu Sea
and even the mighty Humpback Whales
of the Babuyan Islands.

On a national scale, WWF advocates for

appropriate environmental policies and
conducts environmental education
activities in Metro Manila and other key
cities and towns. WWF has corporate
partnerships with leading national
corporations and multinational
companies - mostly in the land
development sector but branching out to
other sectors that directly impact natural
resource use.

Business & Industry Sustainability

Recognizing the key role the business sector plays in sustainable development, WWF partners with corporations
in order to meet environmental, economic and social goals.

Sustainable Land Development: Land is a critical resource: the Philippines faces the prospect of 100 million
people by 2010 and food and water security is crucial to support a growing population. Proper land use is the key:
urbanization of rural land will put resources at risk and may heighten local poverty. As such, WWF works with
major land development companies to ensure that ecological footprint concepts and social equity are integrated
into all residential and commercial development projects.

Eco-Tourism: More and more Filipinos travel within the country to discover the astounding natural wealth of the
archipelago. But tourism can be counterproductive if not managed according to strict sustainability standards.
WWF helps resorts and leisure developments adapt ecotourism guidelines to ensure that natural systems remain
undisturbed and that local communities and indigenous cultures are integrated into the development plan to
stimulate the development of services – giving poor communities a chance to become a major part of local
development.

Sustainability in the Supply Chain: Few people realize that every purchase has a corresponding environmental
consequence: from the energy used for production and transport, the extraction of raw materials – all the way to
the mountains of waste generated when products are discarded.
WWF works with corporations to assess the life-cycle impacts of their products on natural resources, climate
change, human health and biodiversity. We examine the entire life-cycle, from sourcing out raw materials to
manufacturing to transportation and finally to waste processing. In this way, consumers are made to know how
their purchases affect the environment and shift from a wasteful to a green-minded and sustainable lifestyle.

Climate Change
Climate Change is the most serious and pervasive threat for both humanity and nature. The Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the highest scientific body tasked to evaluate the risk of climate change, has
declared that the “warming of the earth’s climate system is unequivocal” and the warming is attributed to the
dramatic rise in human-induced greenhouse gas emissions since the mid 20th-century.

Climate change is now resulting in and will continue to have adverse impacts on natural, economic and social
systems – with dire implications on the country’s aspiration to combat poverty and realize sustainable
development.

WWF’s Climate Change and Energy Program deals with a variety of domestic issues, including climate and
energy policy, energy projects, business cooperation, science-driven work on climate change impacts and
resistance and resilience building for communities that are already affected. The Program also addresses
international policy issues and annually leads Earth Hour – the world’s largest climate action.

We are committed towards reducing the country’s greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring the adaptation of
natural ecosystems and human communities to climate change. WWF is aggressively promoting the use of clean
energy, energy efficiency and conservation measures.

Individual Donors Programme

Naturally, we cannot do this alone. Contributions from people like you will help us better educate individuals,
organizations and corporations on how we can fight both environmental degradation and resource-depletion.
Every peso counts, so should you wish to make monthly or quarterly donations as a supporter of WWF-
Philippines, please call us at 895-6294.
