Between art and architecture, the work of Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen is a
consistent mix of geometric, spatial, and structural experimentation, where each piece is
conceived as a variation within a series. The introductory text by Fernando Perez Oyarzun
unveils the key aspects of the work of the Chilean architects and their particular way of
understanding architecture, and is followed by a chronological journey through 32 works and
projects developed since 2002, when they set up their studio in Concepcion, 500 kilometers south
of Santiago. This itinerary includes the bold prisms of their first houses - which brought them
world renown - as well as their latest projects.

AV devotes this issue to the recent work of Norman Foster, coinciding with the exhibition
organised by Fundacion Telefonica with the Norman Foster Foundation in Madrid. The texts
included deal with the twelve sections of the exhibition, complemented by a biographical profile of
the British architect by J. M. Ledgard, an article by Paul Goldberger on the building of the
Foundation in Madrid and the architect's own thoughts on the spirit and objectives of this new
institution. The future of building and of technique are analysed in articles by Neri Oxman on
Mexico Airport and by Ricky Burdett on the Droneport project. Deyan Sudjic on the SkyCycle and
Mohsen Mostafavi on Masdar explore contemporary sustainability and mobility.

This second volume introduces exemplary architectural works spanning the history of Japanese
architecture, from medieval Japan to the modern era. Filled with detailed illustrations and
photographs, it presents a comprehensive selection of traditional structures and typologies
developed in the Muromachi to the Meiji periods, including the shoin (study or library room),
chashitsu (tea ceremony structure), jokaku (citadel or castle), teien (garden), minka (vernacular
private house), and more. Architect Yutaka Saito offers an essential collection of knowledge that
moves beyond the materiality of the first volume to encapsulate the cultural essence of Japanese
architecture.

Yorit Kluitman cycled through all 388 municipalities in the Netherlands, photographing the
landscape between them in absence of people and buildings. This book presents his tour as a
cross section of the ordered, strangely artificial Dutch landscape. Driven by a fascination for the
organised, graphical structure of open space and the apparently two-dimensional world that
encompasses the nation's urban areas, Kluitman has deconstructed this landscape as part of a
five-year study in collaboration with Vereniging Deltametropool. With contributions by various
specialists such as landscape architect Adriaan Geuze to former Rijksmuseum director Wim
Pijbes.

The expansive areas around large airports, affected by noise, infrastructure, and transient forms
of architecture, have until now not been researched as a phenomenon. But these noise
landscapes are emerging worldwide, often surpassing the neighbouring city in size, and
sometimes rivalling it in economic importance. On the basis of eight European case studies
(Amsterdam, Zurich, London-Heathrow, Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid, and the two Paris airports)
this book provides the first account of how these landscapes emerged as the result of technical
determinations, what is taking place in them, and how they can be interpreted. The book is the
outcome of several years of research by the chair of Kees Christiaanse at the ETH Zurich.

Published by Aalto University on the occasion of the autumn 2013 Wickberg Lectures, this
volume comprises writings by specialists in the fields of art and architecture about the
international Baroque and its reflections in architecture today. From means of expression in
Baroque architecture and modifications of its forms as a bridge to postmodernism, to how
"baroque" motifs are manifested in works by ALA Architects and other recent Finnish architecture,
it addresses the magical enchantment that encounters with the Baroque can offer to the beholder.
With contributions by Paolo Portoghesi, Juho Gronholm, Simo Paavilainen, Juha Leiviska, and
Antonello Alici, among others.

This five-volume set from Damdi focuses on projects that demonstrate the designer's application
of problem-solving methods. The diagram becomes a new realm of its own ('I am Diagram'), the
field of architecture is no longer limited to static objects in the wireless age ('We are Nomad'),
architecture is the will of an epoch translated into spaces that are not finished until they are used
('Storytelling about Interior'), architects make both spaces and things that are used in those
spaces ('Lifestyle Design'), and designers speak freely about who they are and what they do
('Dear my Architect'). Boldly designed and colourfully illustrated, each volume presents an
inspirational offering.

A State Beyond The State - Shenzhen And The Transformation Of Urban China

Supported by numerous interviews and primary data, this book points out the threats posed by
typical large-scale projects of single SOEs (Stateowned enterprises), and further shows
alternative development potentials that match the long-term socioeconomic demand, by learning
from self-evolving SOE areas shaped by the combined forces of various public and private
stakeholders. Since China's 1980s economic reform, the ubiquitous semi-marketized SOEs have
established themselves as immovable landholders in the urban landscape. To improve our
understanding of the Chinese SOE urbanism, Ting Chen made a first-hand account and
evaluation of various SOEs' urban performances and the differing socioeconomic influences of
SOE land transformations.

For many of Antwerp's inhabitants, the Linkeroever is unknown territory. From the banks of the
Scheldt, the opposite side of the river appears as a series of high-rises hovering over a green
strip. City architect Christian Rapp launched an international ideas competition in 2016, with the
ambition to address the Linkeroever as an object of design research and to encourage debate on
the importance of this "separate" part of the city for the whole of Antwerp. The competition sought
images that offer a vision of the future of the city, now published in a book which takes this
initiative as a starting point for examining larger questions about the state of urban development
and design today.

Footprint 20 Analytic Philosophy and Architecture - Approaching Things from the Other
Side Vol 11/1
Jap Sam 2017 ISBN 9789490322847 Acqn 27976
Pb 19x26cm 122pp 21.95
This issue of Footprint explores the potential role of analytic philosophy in the context of
architecture's typical affinity with continental philosophy over the past three decades. In the last
decades of the twentieth century, philosophy became an almost necessary springboard from
which to define a work of architecture. Analytic philosophy took a notable backseat to continental
philosophy. With this history in mind, this issue of Footprint sought to open the discussion on
what might be offered by the less familiar branches of epistemology and logic that are more
prevalent and developed in the analytic tradition.

This volume presents hundreds of manifestations of one aspect of Japanese architecture: the
window. Covering all manner of examples, typologies, and functions, the richly illustrated
anthology gives a technical analysis of each, with photographic views from both exterior and
interior, as well as diagrams detailing how interior space and functions correlate with the
openings in the various buildings' facades. Whether for light, ventilation, accessibility,
permeability, (in)visibility, or a combination of these things, the humble window is revealed in its
crucial role in determining how a specific architectural object is designed, constructed, perceived,
and utilised.

This set of cards contains 50 examples of how to design an urban block. Each card proposes a
possible urban form along with measurements and density data, including floor plans, sun
exposure, coverage, and both the built and occupied floor area per storey. Units are provided in
feet and metres, and axonometric diagrams offer a clear visual supplement to the data, illustrating
the various spatial arrangements. With so many types of urban blocks gathered in a single, easy-
to-use format, the set offers inspiration for architects, designers, and urbanists everywhere.

We are in the midst of redesigning the world and all its systems as we witness the biggest mass
movement of people, goods, factories, frenzied finance, and ideas in history. Vast flows make the
new norm nomadic. Yet there is a yearning for belonging, distinctiveness, and identity as the
'anytime, anyplace, anywhere' phenomenon enabled by digitization is changing how we interact
with space, place, and time. This is the Civic City. It tries to find a pathway through the major fault
lines, dilemmas and potentials of our time - shared lives, inequality, environmental distress, and
urban vitality. In this book, the inventor of the "Creative City" concept helps us navigate the
evolving urban landscapes and its potential.

Authored by Lorenzo Ciccarelli, the first scholar with access to the Renzo Piano Foundation
archives, this book explores the world-renowned architect's formative years, prior to the major
achievement of the Centre Pompidou. Although this striking success has long tended to
overshadow his earlier series of radical and innovative experimental structures, it is precisely this
formative period which is fundamental to understanding the genesis of his subsequent work and
his unceasing interest in industrial design. The engaging stories found in this book are an
essential instrument in illuminating and reinterpreting the architect with previously unpublished
archival material.

Modern glass facades are technically demanding and fascinating in design. Glass as a building
material has diverse characteristics, even contrary on occasion, and architects are increasingly
using the high design potential of fully glazed facades in representative building projects outside
of the typical office typology. An essay by Christian Schittich opens an exploration of this
transformative element of architecture through fourteen works designed by as many architects.
Projects range from a Shanghai tea house by Atelier Deshaus and Mikkelsen Arkitekter's
Ramboll Headquarters in Copenhagen, to works by Atelier Kempe Thill, Wiel Arets, Pezo von
Ellrichshausen, more.

Architect Lise Juel expresses how "Melancholy as a concept has been a useful perspective in
understanding artists and artworks, but it remains underexposed in the field of architecture." And
yet, she continues, this is "not melancholic in its negative sense, but in the sense of a thoughtful
and pensive approach to life." Seventeen houses in Denmark are featured in this issue, along
with more than a dozen architectural offices that in turn reflect this melancholic perspective
through their work, key to understanding Danish architectural practice, both traditionally and in
the present. With work by Jeppe Utzon, LETH & GORI, Primus Architects, Atelier Lise Juel, and
more.

'Good Buildings on a Small Planet' portrays eight Danish architectural firms that are creating new
architecture where sustainability is not simply a question of consuming less, but also about giving
more. More beauty. More meaning. More community. What is a good building on a small planet?
How can we create a rich, humanist architecture that is built on a profound respect for local as
well as global resources? This book presents eight different answers that are framed by thoughts,
ideas, and new architecture. The architects portrayed are Lendager Group, GXN, C.F. Moller
Architects, Vandkunsten, EFFEKT, Henning Larsen Architects, SLA, and Tredje Natur (Third

In the digital era the office is ubiquitous, without a defined space or time. Everything can be done
at any moment of the day and in any location. Caruso St John Architects and Javier Mozas (a+t

changing buildings and their sources of inspiration. Edited by Aurora Fernandez, this issue
includes an illustrated glossary containing significant projects and a time line of the most crucial
innovations in the workplace environment in recent years. The publication comprises a selection
of content which has previously been published in a+t magazine's 'Workforce' series.

Japan-based Go Hasegawa has found himself increasingly in the spotlight in recent years, a
much sought-after younger architect who has built a career through his intensive inquiry on our
perception of space, gravity, and time. He challenges pre-existing ideas on largeness/smallness,
heaviness/lightness, and newness/oldness, seeking values not previously recognized. His work
has explored several building types in addition to the houses for which he is known. This issue
gives an in-depth look at Hasegawa's practice, featuring apartments in Okachimachi, a gazebo in
Shanghai, an iced coffee shop in Tokyo, a chapel in Guastalla, a townhouse in Asakusa, and
other works.

Designed by Adolf Loos in his later years, these two houses are twin examples of the architect's
plain, unadorned style of architecture, despite their difference in size and budget. Both Villa
Moller (1926-27) in Vienna and Villa Muller (1928-30) in Prague are illustrative of his 'Raumplan'
design method. Loos applied a utilitarian approach in using the entire floor plan that would only
later receive greater appreciation with the advent of postmodernism, an innovative spatialisation
comprising sequences of spaces drawn in three dimensions. Photographed by Yoshio Futagawa,
the two houses and the spatial brilliance of Loos come to life in an eclectic symbiosis with
modernism.

The Fundamental Acts propose a collective reformulation of five great themes of the human
existence - Life, Education, Ceremony, Love and Death. They were conceived by Superstudio as
a series of films centered on the relationship between architecture and the acts of human life. The
films were sketched in storyboard format and later published as a series of documents on the
pages of Casabella magazine. The Fundamental Acts contain the possibility of reintroducing a
discourse on the relationship between architecture and ritual. They have been (re)produced by a
group of international contributors and the documents submitted have been collected in this book.

When it comes to urbanism, small things matter, and the various contributors to this issue
illuminate this idea further in various ways. Liz Teston, for instance, captures the theme when she
writes about the transient micro-urbanisms of protest architecture. Levi Bryant claims how we
design things can make a real difference in our lives, both socially and physically. Our cities' less
visible infrastructure is exposed by Julian Oliver, reminding us of our dependence on a deeper
physical reality, while Marco Casagrande shows how small-scale interventions can also serve as
a design methodology, creating ripple effects and a transformation of the larger urban organism.
