Coloured Shape Mats
Coloured Shape Mats
Coloured Shape Mats
Programming Purpose:
Previously, I have done an activity with foam blocks. This activity was interesting for the preschoolers
because they were able to explore a different texture of blocks. However, in this activity, I want to put more
of a focus on shapes. Not only shapes but also colours. When the children did activities with shapes before,
they were not able to identify most of them. Also, the last activity I did used colours and gross motor
movement and they were very interested. Due to this, I want to implement an activity that can encompass
shapes, colours and gross motor.
Objective:
Children will get a chance to explore shapes such as a triangle, square and a star. With this, I will also try to
incorporate some gross motor movement by having the kids jump from mat to mat based on either the
color or shape. The children will understand two-dimensional shapes (4.17) in the ELECT. By counting the
sides and corners, identifying similar attributes, and recognizing the names of each shape, they will be able
to successfully do so. In addition, children can also sort all of the identical shapes into groups.
Next, the children will be able to identify patterns (4.18) in the ELECT. Because each of the mats are different
colours, the children can identify different patters such as the shapes or the colours of each mat. They can
identify other objects in the room that look similar to the shapes that they have.
Lastly, the children will be able to use their gross motor skills (5.2) in the ELECT. By jumping from mat to mat
either on one leg or two, jumping in a pattern, or even galloping, they can increase their coordination. They
can do so based on jumping from either a star to a circle or a red star to a blue star etc. I want them to
explore the mats however they want and I will try to incorporate a lot of movement.
Materials: Modifications:
Opening (Introduction)
I will open this activity by asking the children to join me on the carpet. Then I will ask them who wants to
play with some shapes? Next, I will show them the shapes and lay them out onto the carpet and observe
what they do and ask them questions such as how many sides does a square have or what colour is this
circle? I will also use do-it signals to give them a clear explanation of what to do and I will also use
challenges to see what gross motor movements they are capable of doing.
Body (Content)
To conclude, I will ask the children to put their shapes away based on the colour or the actual shape itself.
Transition
The children will tidy up after free play by listening to the Tidy Up song and get ready for lunch.
