during the prohibition era (1920-1933), the import, sale
and consumption of alcohol was forbidden by law.
organized crime and bootlegging rose to meet the
publics demand for booze. one legendary rum-runner
was gertrude cleo lythgoe.

while working in new york as a stenographer for a

british importer/exporter when prohibition was passed,
gertie was chosen to set up a wholesale liquor
business operating out of nassau.

gertie operated fearlessly in a male-dominated

profession. on one occassion, on hearing herself and
her goods been bad-mouthed by a man, she marched
into the barbers shop, dragged the critic out and
took him to her office, where she promised to
put a bullet through him if he didnt stop. the man fled.
other men tried to intimidate her and found themselves
threatened at gunpoint, by the fearsome beautiful gertie.

during her years of operation, gertie achieved celebrity

status through popular newspaper stories.
eventually she left the bahamas, retired from the
bootlegging business and returned to america.
she died in 1974 at the age of 86.

cheers to you gertie!

The movie about Loretta Lynn's career in country music, featured a few
landmarks of Nashville. In one scene Sissy Spacek, aka Loretta Lynn, is seen arguing with
Tommy Lee Jones in the alley between the Ryman Auditorium and Tootsie's
World Famous Orchid Lounge. Legendary musical artists have played the stage at Tootsie's
during the breaks at the Grand Ole Opry while performing at the Ryman Auditorium.

You have to look closely for Nashville in this one - in the first couple of minutes, there's a fight

whisk(e)y
Whiskey is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage

o
made from fermented grain mash. Various grains
(which may be malted) are used for different varieties,
including barley, corn (maize), rye, and wheat. Whiskey is typically aged in wooden
casks, generally made of charred white oak. Whiskey is a strictly regulated spirit
worldwide with many classes and types. The typical unifying characteristics of the
different classes and types are the fermentation of grains, distillation, and aging
in wooden barrels.

rye
Rye needs to be, as noted, 51% rye. The remaining 49% includes
other grains. Usually, those grains include corn, wheat, malted
rye, and malted barley, in any combination. Some distilleries,
though, have experimented with rice, oats, and other grains. In ryes from
large producers, though, the proportions are typically about 51% rye, 39%
corn, and 10% malted barley. Like bourbon, the rules on rye require the use of

o
new charred-oak barrels. This allows the barrel to impart more of its own
flavors of oak, caramel, and vanilla into the whiskey than you get with Scotch,
which generally uses second-hand barrels.

Bourbon whiskey must be made from a grain mixture which is at least 51%
corn. The fermentation process for this mixture is often started by mixing in
some mash from an older already fermenting batch, a process known as sour
mash. Much like how Scotch must be made in Scotland, Bourbon can only be
labeled as Bourbon if it was made in the United States. While the rules are
slightly more loose with Bourbon than with Scotch it still has to conform to a
few requirements. The spirit must be distilled to no more than 80% alcohol
and be no more than 62.5% when put into casks for aging in new charred oak
barrels. Finally Bourbon has no minimum aging period, but to call your

bourbon
product Straight Bourbon it must be
aged for no less than two years (and no
added flavors or spirits).
